Destiny or Expression Number

If there are some things that don’t quite compute for you as you get to know your Life Path number, then add this information about your Expression or Destiny Number to help round out your specific life purpose.  Some Numerologist’s call this number the Expression Number and some call it the Destiny Number.

Your Expression/Destiny Number is a vital component or compliment to your Life Path number. I like to say that your Life Path number represents a one-dimensional look at who you are – it indicates your primary purpose in life.  Yet when you add it with the Expression/Destiny number, the Expression/Destiny number indicates to you the manner in which you’ll go about achieving your purpose, as indicated by your Life Path number.
It’s like taking your Life Path number and pouring it into a martini shaker and then adding the Destiny number to the mix, shaking (or stirring!) and then the result is a more complex, holographic version of who you are and how you’re supposed to go about doing what you’re doing.
So, as an example:  Say you’re a One Life Path, you know at the get-go that you’re all about leadership, acting on original ideas, confidence, creativity, initiation, action, competition.  So then, when you place your Destiny number on top of your Life Path number, you get the flavor and manner in which you go about achieving your One Life Path purpose. 
Your Destiny number is basically setting the bar for what you’re to live up to.  It’s like the expectation your teacher or parent (or you yourself!) has for your long-term goals.  The Expression/Destiny number offers you the key to how you will express your Life Path purpose.
So let’s continue with the example of the One Life Path. If you have a Two Destiny number, chances are you feel a certain amount of conflict in your life given that the One is all about Number One (you!), independence, individuality, achievement,  leadership – where the pull of the number Two is much softer and all about love, balance, harmony, and serving group dynamics.  So no wonder you might feel conflicted given your disparate goals and purpose.  This isn’t an impossible combination by any means!  In fact, every combination has its shining potentials.  The trick is to understand the basic pull of each so that you can work toward maximizing the strengths of each, diminishing the weaknesses,  and allowing it all to work in tandem.
Say you have an Eight Destiny number.  Mixed with your One Life Path, you’re much more likely to err on the side of “Hard Luck Charlie” given that both numbers have a certain amount of hard knocks built into the purpose of both the One and the Eight.
It would also explain your hard-driving nature, your devotion perhaps to business, to making money, and to achievement in the material world (or avoidance of the same!).  Both the One and the Eight are aligned with achievement on the financial realm.  That also might give you an indication of why find yourself struggling.  Perhaps you’ve swung over to the other side of the spectrum and have problems with addictions and financial loss that have overtaken your life – just as one example.
Sometimes a person will “present” more in alignment with their Destiny Number (how they go about doing their life’s purpose) than with the Life Path number itself.  Know that the Life Path number indicates what you’ve come here to learn more about.  Therefore, often the Life Path number can take time and maturity to develop, understand, and master.
Either way, knowing both your Life Path and your Destiny numbers can allow you to put some of the puzzle pieces together in a way you might not have been able to before.

What Your Destiny Number Reveals About Your Life Purpose



  • The flavor and manner of living that you must cultivate and act upon in your life;
  • Your opportunities for success and your stumbling blocks to achieving your full potential;
  • At the “end of the day,” this is how you’re destined to achieve and express your life purpose;
  • Offers you an idea of how you can make the most out of your life experience;
  • The kind of work that would be a natural compliment and expression of your life purpose as defined by your Life Path.

Calculate Your Destiny Number



Write down the name you were given at birth, just as it is written on your birth certificate.

Use the chart and apply a number to each letter of your name;  first, middle, last.  If you have more than one middle name, please use all of the names as they appear on your birth certificate.  If you’re a Jr., Second or Third, please leave that out of the equation.
Let’s use George (Timothy) Clooney as an example.  You calculate this much in the same way you calculate your Life Path number.  It’s a simple addition problem once you assign a number value to the letter in the name (as indicated by the chart below).  Like always, you must digit down to a one-digit number for each part of the calculation:

Destiny Number One


Your destiny is to become #1 at all you do in your life.
Your task is to develop your true, authentic self and to become in leader in whatever field you find you’re the most passionate and skilled.  You’re all about power.  You want to be the best at everything you do. You expect very high standards of performance from yourself and, in turn, also expect the same from others, which can set you up for frustration and disappointment.
Your purpose is to take the lead and take initiative—the One Destiny number is not lack-luster or low-key! You’re meant to have courage, act independently on your unique and original ideas, be innovative, and take charge.  All this while communicating and acting with clarity and compassion. 
A One Destiny number sets you up for a lifetime of development of your sense of self (banish that sense of self-doubt), your willpower, and setting out with determination without allowing the naysayers or glitches along the road weigh you down or demolish your vision. You work hard and play hard.  You need to have an exercise routine that helps you burn off excess stress.
Your One Destiny number insists that even if you struggle with self confidence or hold yourself back from manifesting your full powers, you’re lined up for a destiny that demands that you embrace leadership.  You need to demonstrate your originality and leadership and also teach it to others.  The One Destiny number will demand that you develop yourself from a dependence to independence, individuation, and – ultimately – achievement and initiative.

Destiny Number Two

Your destiny is to bring people together in an atmosphere of harmony and love.
Your mission is to create harmony, balance, cooperation, and love wherever you go and in whatever you do.  Love is the cornerstone to your life and finding that perfect mate is important to you. You’re here to learn how to develop your sense of relationship;  how to successfully understand and relate to others and to yourself. 
Your path includes developing diplomacy.  Your Two Destiny encourages you to seek to be of service to the “larger cause;” whether that’s your family, your company, or any other cause or group you feel strongly about.  Your destiny is to develop adaptability, open- hearted caring, and focus on the higher good.  Understand that you need to get out and socialize, because when you isolate yourself, you suffer from pessimism, depression, and inaction. 
You thrive when you’re involved with other people and contributing to the group dynamics, whether it’s with friends, work, family, or a community group. You’ll be tested with being overly sensitive and can resort to becoming confrontational rather than the harmonizer.  Beware of needing incessant reinforcement from everyone around you, because you’re not likely to get it!  Even if you find that you’re challenged with being passive or aggressive—indecisive or lacking focus—your calling is to become a peacemaker and harmonizing influence on whatever you touch.

Destiny Number Three

Your destiny is to inspire, motivate, heal, and uplift people.
If you find you have a Destiny Number Three, you’re being called to inspire, heal, uplift, and energize others.  You’re all about performance, however that manifests for you in your life.  Your ultimate purpose comes through when you’re operating with a core sense of optimism, enthusiasm, compassion, and joy. 
Some of the qualities you bring to the table are beauty, possible eccentricity, excitement, and fame.  When you’ve tapped into your authentic sense of expression and then inspire others to use and express theirs, you’re fulfilling your life’s purpose.  If you give up on your dreams and don’t use your talents creatively, you’ll battle with depression and find yourself traveling down other unsatisfying or destructive pathways.  You must pursue your true calling, so make efforts to focus on what that is for you, believe in it and don’t be deterred from embracing it. 
Often the Three brings so many talents and ideas with it, it’s difficult to focus on just one, making procrastination or scattered focus a hurdle.  You’ll be challenged with learning to identify and embrace your own emotional life and often will be most effective in helping yourself help others through your gift of words (both verbal and written), through your amazing sense of wit and humor, and by being lighthearted and a good communicator and listener.

Destiny Number Four

Your destiny is to leave something of value that people can find beneficial in their day-to-day lives.
You’re intent on building something of lasting value; whether that’s a family of your own, a business, or other enterprise.  You’re all about stability and security.  You’re hardworking, can be a pillar of your community, and are immanently trustworthy. In fact, honesty is a big issue for you.
You have the potential to be a stellar marriage or business partner. Your life purpose revolves around being practical and hardworking.  You’re the systems-builder.  You’re the keeper of order and thrive on stability and security.  You might lean toward rigidness or stubbornness.
You could avoid putting down roots, shy away from hard work, and avoid having a family of your own.  Sometimes you can become so self-sacrificing that you become the martyr or a tyrant.  This stems from your need to control and also from your high level of expectation about your own performance—and the performance of others.  Your intentions are always for the greater good, yet that’s not often clear to anyone but you.
The biggest roadblock for the Four Destiny number is a fear of appearing dumb (or let’s say “under informed”) and a fear of taking risks.  A person with a Four Destiny number can wake up one day when they’re older and realize that none of their dreams have been realized because of their inability to step outside their own self-imposed box.
Even so, your Four Destiny number puts you on the path of managing, organizing, and creating a foundation from which to build your life or enterprise.  Don’t let fear of criticism stop you from creating the foundation from which you build your contribution to the world.

Your destiny is to effect change and show people how to live life to the maximum.

You’re a natural salesperson when you’re dealing with something you believe in.  This Destiny number leads you on a roller coaster, where life can feel as though it’s coming at you without a filter.  Your destiny is one of liberation and freedom, no matter how you slice it. 
If you find yourself on the opposite end of the spectrum, you’ll do battle with self-absorption, paranoia, myopia, fearfulness, and emotional paralysis.  Remember there’s truly nothing to fear but fear itself (thank you Franklin D. Roosevelt).
You can move through intimate relationships like you’re changing your socks.  Your effect on other people can be baffling to you, as others might feel tricked or “played” by you, even when you’re simply moving to the beat of your own music.  Your heightened self-centered emotionalism might also try your friendships and intimate relationships. You can swerve over into the “high maintenance” category with great ease, making your love relationships, family interaction, and friendships potentially exasperating to those on the other end of your relationship-pole.  
Move forward, recalibrate yourself, and embrace positive change.  Ultimately, your gift is showing others how to live fearlessly through your example.  The key to your Five Destiny is to work with boundaries and certain parameters or life could be chaotic and out of control.

Destiny Number Six

Your destiny is to provide a nurturing safe ‘nest’ for yourself and your loved ones.
Your mission is to nurture and serve, plain and simple.  Whether it’s your family and loved ones or your business or community, you are a master at creating beauty, harmony, and balance.  Love (shaken and stirred!) with acceptance is key for you as a Six Destiny number. 
You have a polished presentation about you and denote an air of authority in whatever you do.  One of your specialties is damage control, so when things are moving along without trauma or drama, you have a tendency to either sweat it (while you wait for the other shoe to drop, so to speak) or you stir things up in order to have a problem to focus your energies on. Give yourself permission to accept things when life is good and smooth!  They’ll always be another problem to solve down the line.  No need to push it.
You may find yourself in positions of responsibility early on in your life and that sense of responsibility will continue as you mature. You’re a people pleaser, sometimes to your detriment. You need to feel indispensable to others and yet resent the fact that others rely on you too much.  Beware of partnering with someone who is more of a “patient” than a partner because you’ll find yourself becoming an enabler rather than a nurturer.  Remember that your mission is to balance and modulate your sense of responsibility – not overly responsible (meddling, self-righteous, perfectionist) and not overly irresponsible (self-centered, judgmental, controlling).

Destiny Number Seven

Your destiny is to develop trust and faith and find your own answer to the meaning of life.
As a Seven Destiny number, your mission is to seek out information and analyze it.  You’re all about knowledge and spiritual seeking. You dig deep and contemplate heavily.  You’re the perfect researcher and everything always comes back to informing your own sense of inner wisdom.  Your life-long task is to get to know the true you, inside and out.
You need a good deal of private “alone” time.  Your life is instructed by a powerful collision between practical, tangible data and the analysis of it.  Then on the other hand, you’re highly intuitive and your gift—and your task—is to integrate the two (your intellect and your intuition) into a harmonious dance team. 
If you find yourself isolated to the point of withdrawing from the “outside world,” you’re straying from the constructive nature of your Seven Destiny.  The highest and best use of your extraordinary talents are cultivating knowledge, processing it into new ideas or practical usage, and applying your advanced wisdom to the data. 
You’re a person people never really truly know because you’re most often attempting to figure that out yourself!  Watch out for your sharp words, as you can hurt people without realizing it. You have exquisite observation skills and when you have a strong sense of spirituality (however that manifests for you), you’re at your best.  Otherwise, you can fall into superficiality, skepticism, cynicism or depression.  You’re a gentle soul and your destiny is to share your hard-won wisdom with the world.

Destiny Number Eight

Your destiny is to manifest financial security that allows you freedom to make a difference in the world.
An Eight Destiny number is calling for you to gain self-mastery in a profound way.  Your purpose is to achieve and succeed with business and organization—not to mention personal power, control, authority, and above all, ethics.  The Eight is a relentless taskmaster and demands that you understand and employ all your abilities to achieve financial abundance and also to give to others generously.  When you realize that you’re here to achieve power and abundance and then act on that knowledge, your destiny will be fulfilled. Right out of the gate, you have authority issues.
Do you walk into a room as if you own the place (even when you don’t)?  Watch out for becoming an opinionated control-freak. Steer clear of greed, ruthlessness, or being overly opinionated and over-bearing.  Instead, focus on wealth and abundance.  Remember that as you give, you receive. Oddly enough, you can be extremely sentimental and emotional.  It’s your task to learn to be a confident and charismatic person without becoming corrupted or hardened by power and money. 
Remember that you have amazing potential for improving the lives of a lot of people.  You’re a masterful leader;  a powerhouse made for material success.  You can be easily misinterpreted because of your gruff, direct, and opinionated manner.  When you’re thriving financially and giving generously from your heart, you’re doing what you were born to do.  Your word of caution:  don’t allow the pursuit of money to overshadow your ability to build healthy relationships and don’t be so stubborn!  Listen to other peoples’ advice;  they can help you build your empire.
Your flip-side is that you find yourself in the opposite situation.  The first item of business that’ll open the gate for you to achieve your Eight Destiny is to dig deep and tap into your sense of personal empowerment.  And believe me, you’ll be handed a treasure-trove of opportunities to step up or be stepped on
Money and power are a consistent theme in your life one way or the other.  I know people who scoff when they hear they their Destiny number  (or Life Path number) is an Eight (or their significant others’ is an Eight) and comment with great exasperation:  “I can’t even hold down a job!” or “If only it were true that I’m supposed to make a lot of money – I’m on disability”  or “I’ve just never had the lucky break I need – I never get a break.”
If you struggle with money, start with healing and establishing your sense of yourself by establishing and acting on your personal boundaries.  The energy of the Eight isn’t an easy walk in the park.  It demands that you dig into your power and move through obstacles – and there will be many obstacles.  An Eight Destiny number means you have to step it up.

Destiny Number Nine

Your destiny is to achieve a higher state of consciousness and teach others how to achieve theirs.
Your mission is a humanitarian one.  Yours is a spiritual path and you’re here to love unconditionally, however that may manifest in your life. You’re often a hopeless romantic at heart and can set yourself up for disappointment when people don’t measure up to your ideals.   You’re at your optimal when you’re tapping into your creativity, sensitivity, and selflessness.
Beware that others may find that you’re ideas are a little on the cuckoo-side! This Destiny number is a powerful one demanding that you learn to transform and heal (both yourself and others) while letting go of the past freely and without bitterness. 
You may find yourself tripping over into the arena of resentment, of intolerance, or gullibility.  You may have to deal with enmeshment with your family of origin throughout your life. Your task is to let go of family issues fully and completely.  You often feel either resentment toward the family or feel overly responsible for them.
You need to be aware that people respond much more favorably to you when you connect with them through being a compassionate active listener rather than a preacher, lecturer, or proselytizer. Understand that you can have an intimidating quality to you, despite your big heart.  So be careful about how your frame your discussion so that people don’t feel as though you’re patronizing them. 
Often the Nine Destiny number can come off as arrogant or unapproachable.  Realize that everyone thinks you have it all (or have it all together) and so you find it difficult to ask for help or support.  It’s not only okay to ask for help, it’s very healing for you.  Know that your Nine Destiny is a profound journey that offers you multifaceted opportunities to touch the lives of others and heal some of your own deepest wounds.  You’re learning how to both give and receive.

Master Destiny Number Eleven/Two

Your destiny is to heal and transform others through selfless service and artistic creativity.
Your special mission is to recognize and use your creativity, intuition, and healing abilities for the benefit of humanity as a whole.  You can achieve this in a multitude of ways—eliciting an emotional response through dance, music, or art.  Working one-on-one or in groups with various healing modalities.  Or you can write, entertain, teach. 
Remember, you are a double One (leadership, confidence) and yet also a Two (harmony, love).  So you come with some special challenges to fulfill your mission.  A Two Life Path will go out of their way to avoid being in the spotlight.  A Two is most at peace and satisfied when they’re taking the reins behind the scenes.  The Eleven pushes you into the spotlight and this will have some disconcerting effects on you.  You’ll feel as though nothing you do is ever quite enough.  You’ll have a nervous energy that you just can’t control.  You’ll lean toward impatience and criticism (toward yourself and others) and arm-wrestle with self-doubt.
If you’re to embrace this Destiny number, you’ll do battle with a fairly hefty ego, which is ironic because you volley from feeling totally inferior to loftily superior; back and forth.  This number sets you up for inspired leadership and achievement.  Yet you’ll most likely feel as though you’re jumping through rings of fire to get there.
You might even think of yourself as “The Wounded Healer,” because your life provides you with plenty of obstacles to get your footing, embrace your high level of spirituality and intuition, and then act upon your gifts in a solid and practical way that will bring your message to the masses.  This Destiny number requires that you build and use your emotional psychic shield daily or you’ll become so emotionally wounded you won’t have the strength or fortitude to fulfill your mission.

Master Destiny Number  Twenty-Two/Four

Your destiny is to bring forth masterful teaching and inspired practical ideas.

Your mission as a Master number is to execute and build projects that will benefit a wide arena of humankind.  This is a spiritual path (like all the Master numbers) that prods you to step out of the slow, steady security of the number Four and kick it up substantially.  This will be uncomfortable for you until you get the hang of it, because it’s contrary to the pull you have with the rule-following energy of the Four.
You’ll use all the hardworking, step-by-step qualities of the Four while tapping into a higher level of purpose and action.  You’ll learn to take risks and look toward setting higher stakes with your enterprises.  You’re the Master Builder extraordinaire, so look toward building solid foundations to your enterprise with the big picture in front of you at all times. 
You might be challenged with not feeling up to the task or even entitled to do something that might take you into fame and fortune.  You might even cringe at the idea of making a lot of money given the energy of the Four is more about feeling a sense of security, not necessarily manifesting abundance.  It sounds like a small detail, yet mentally this can drag you down.
You’re being pushed toward bringing spiritual practices down to the material, day-to-day world.  Avoid your stubborn streak and a tendency to be a know-it-all.  Gather your supporters around you, set up the systems to make it work, and hand over some of the responsibilities to others.  If you find yourself doing it all yourself, you aren’t living up to your Twenty-Two Destiny. 

Master Destiny Number Thirty-Three

Your destiny is masterful healing and inspired vision.
This is a challenge from the get-go.  If you find yourself with a Thirty-Three Destiny number, your mission (should you choose to accept it! . . . cue Mission Impossible music . . . ) is to be a Master Healer and to bring forth a higher form of love to the world.  Since you have the double Three’s, you also have to do this with joy, fun, and heart-felt communication and expression.
 It’s your calling to teach and show by example the power of love.  You’re meant to serve as a conduit to healing on whatever level you feel most compelled to engage.  The Master number presupposes that you’ll take on leadership positions and the Thirty-Three/Six encompasses visionary goals, truth and beauty, and a nurturing and giving heart.
You might wrestle with feeling over-burdened.  Your tendency will be to be emotionally raw, taking in the wounds of the world.  Even so, you’re still on the path of helping and healing in whatever form you choose.

Expression Numbers

Number 1
A number 1 Expression denotes the skilled executive with keen administrative capabilities. You must develop the capacity to be a fine leader, sales executive, or promoter. You have the tools to become an original person with a creative approach to problem solving, and a penchant for initiating action. Someone may have to follow behind you to handle the details, but you know how to get things going and make things happen. You have a good mind and the ability to use it for your advancement. Because of these factors, you have much potential for achievement and financial rewards. Frequently, this expression belongs to one running a business or striving to achieve a level of accomplishment on ones talents and efforts. You have little need for much supervision, preferring to act on your own with little restraint. You are both ambitious and determined. In Numerology, we all have a Maturity Number. 

The energy related to this number kicks in when we arrive into our 40s.

Side Note:  I find it somewhat humorous that with Numerology, everything has a precise calculation except for the Maturity Number.  The influence of this number appears to happen incrementally – from the age of 35 – 50.

In many ways, the Maturity Number indicates the nature of your true self – an ultimate goal and encompassing mission.  It also more distinctly guides and informs the second portion of your life – after the early “been there, done that” years.  Most Numerologist’s agree that the impact of this number is in full force by the time you reach the age of 50 and continues to influence you for the rest of your life.

The gift of this additional energy is that “suddenly” you feel that you don’t have the time nor patience to waste on things that aren’t moving you toward this ultimate goal, whatever that may be for you individually. 


You calculate the Maturity Number (also called the Reality or Realization Number) by adding your Life Path number and your Destiny/Expression number together.

  • Financial situation may change dramatically – through divorce, illness, or other transitions.

Maturity Number 2

You’re moving toward reevaluating what it means use your emotional sensitivity to the benefit of both yourself and others.  You’re being called upon to use diplomacy, to involve yourself with group dynamics, and to open yourself to relationships.

You’re moving toward reevaluating what it means to work with selfless service to humanity.   You’re being called upon to work with giving and contributing without thought of personal reward, letting go of “self” in order to learn to be of service to others, and to learn not to attach to particular outcomes.

Where you’ll be challenged:  With this Maturity Number, there’s often a shift in life bringing issues related to balance the needs of others with your own needs  to center stage.  Situations will arise highlighting your need to service a higher need or purpose, to delve into a spiritual path in full force, and to use your extraordinary talents to heal, perform, write, teach or be a philanthropist.

What that might look like: 
  • Dealing with “loss” on many levels in order to surrender to your spiritual path.
  • A realization that self centeredness and lack of understanding others’ perspectives feels dissatisfying.
  • Opportunities arise to be of service and use your compassion and charisma to make the world a better place.

Esoteric Astrology: The Journey of the Soul

Esoteric astrology is the astrology of the soul. The delineation of a natal chart from the soul-centred perspective focuses on the purpose of the soul, why we are here, where we have come from, and where we are heading. Traditional or exoteric astrology is the astrology of the personality. Its focus is on the problems and potentials of the personality.

The body of knowledge known as Esoteric Astrology is drawn from the Theosophical tradition and the teachings of the Tibetan teacher Djwhal Khul, as dictated to Alice A. Bailey. It is contained in a voluminous set of books which form a large part of what is referred to as the Ancient or Ageless Wisdom teachings.

Soul-centred astrology is based on the understanding that there is a spark of divinity, or 'soul' within each of us. According to this cosmology, reincarnation and the reality of the soul are accepted as fact. Many sense this divinity. The moments of deep insight, peace, awe, wonder, grace and love that we have all experienced at some time are voices from the Soul.

Some call this divinity God/Goddess, the Higher Self, the Core Self, the Transpersonal Self, the inner voice, the Buddha or Christ. It manifests as the religious urge in man/woman. Indeed, Carl Jung, in his book Modern Man in Search of a Soul, makes the astounding assertion that in thirty years of treating patients in the second half of life, their illness or neurosis was invariably the result of a lack of spiritual or religious meaning:

"....there has not been one whose problem in the last resort was not that of finding a religious outlook on life. It is safe to say that every one of them fell ill because he had lost that which the living religions of every age have given to their followers, and none of them has been really healed who did not regain his religious outlook." [1]

This soul, or divine spark, strives towards unity and perfection, and according to the Ancient Wisdom teachings, its motivation is selfless and its purpose is service to humanity or contribution to the greater whole. It is essentially a humanitarian philosophy and is therefore highly appropriate for our incoming Age of Aquarius. According to the Ancient Wisdom teachings, the structure of man/woman can be symbolically represented as a downward-pointing triangle (the personality) linked by the Antahkarana or Rainbow Bridge to an upward-pointing triangle (the soul). See Figure 1.

The highest goal of traditional or personality-centred astrology is the integration of the personality. This is achieved by recognising and striving to overcome the limitations and problems of the personality, such as physical excesses, emotional instability and negative thinking. The goal of personality integration is to bring the body, emotions and mind into a state of harmony. The orientation of many of the personal growth techniques and healing modalities is towards this end. For example, hatha yoga, nutrition and herbal medicine work on healing the physical body. The Bach Flower Remedies and counselling work on healing the emotional nature. Positive affirmations, Christian Science and prayer work on healing the mental nature.

The integration of the personality is an on-going process. Once this has been achieved to some degree, the goal becomes one of infusing the personality with the qualities of the soul, or to make the connection with the Higher Self. There are various techniques which can assist us to connect with the Soul or Higher Self. These include meditation, some forms of creative visualisation, dreamwork, psychosynthesis, artistic and musical expression, communing with nature, compassionate service, study of the Holy Scriptures and Ancient Wisdom classics, and so on.

The soul-infused personality is symbolically represented by the six-pointed star. See Figure 2. [3]

You will notice that the triangle of the Soul has a threefold nature corresponding to a higher octave of the personality vehicles. The physical body has its higher counterpart in Spiritual Will or Purpose. The emotional body has its higher counterpart in Universal Love, while the mental body or rational mind has its higher counterpart in Higher Mind.

There are several approaches to esoteric astrology, and it is indeed a complex body of knowledge. Therefore, I would like to keep it as simple as possible. One of the fundamental differences between esoteric and exoteric astrology is that both are based on a completely different set of planetary rulerships.

Some esoteric astrologers, such as Dr Douglas Baker, dismiss traditional astrology altogether and work only with the esoteric rulerships. Other esoteric astrologers, such as Alan Oken, recommend the interfacing or juxtaposing of the personality-centred chart with the soul-centred chart.

Another important point is that esoteric astrology has its foundation in an understanding of the Science of the Seven Rays. [4] This is a system of soul/personality typology and is referred to by Bailey as Esoteric Psychology. For the purposes of this article however, I am not going to deal with the Seven Rays, although their meanings are implicit within each of the astrological factors.

What I am presenting here is a somewhat eclectic approach which can only scratch the surface of this vast body of knowledge. There are a few basic principles which we can begin to work with straight away, and which will help us to shift the focus from personality problems and potential to spiritual purpose. I am not recommending that we forget the personality. I feel that it is still important to delineate the natal chart in the traditional way. But what we can do is add a soul-centred perspective to our traditional delineations.

The Ascendant
Perhaps you have felt that there is a deeper meaning to the Rising Sign than a mere description of the physical appearance, the persona or the manner in which we project ourselves? In esoteric astrology, the Ascendant is the key indicator of the Soul's Purpose. This does not mean that the empirical evidence of traditional astrology is invalid. What we can say is that the soul's purpose is projected through the persona at the Ascendant.

It is a tenet of traditional astrology that the Ascendant is symbolic of the birth or point of incarnation, of the entry of the soul onto the physical plane or the cross of matter. Esoteric astrology merely takes this a step further. If we look to the qualities of the sign on the Ascendant, we can glean valuable information about the nature of spiritual purpose and service.

The qualities of the Ascendant sign describe the future direction of the soul, what we are growing towards, or new qualities that we are developing.

In this respect, we can see its meaning as similar in flavour to the North Node, although I would suggest that the qualities of the houses and signs of the nodal axis tell us how we can achieve personality integration, or integration of the yin and yang within the personality. The quest of the hero as symbolised by the North Node is the quest of the personality.

The sign on the Ascendant indicates how we can best express our personality gifts to extend beyond ourselves to help others, or to help the planet as a whole. The house position of the esoteric ruling planet of the Ascendant indicates where these gifts and qualities are best expressed. It points to the field of service of the soul.

The Esoteric Rulerships of the Signs

These rulerships may seem odd at first, but a deeper study will reveal their significance.
Aries - Mercury
Taurus - Vulcan
Gemini - Venus
Cancer - Neptune
Leo - Sun
Virgo - Moon
Libra - Uranus
Scorpio - Mars
Sagittarius - Earth
Capricorn - Saturn
Aquarius - Jupiter
Pisces - Pluto
Vulcan is an undiscovered or hypothetical planet, and esoteric astrologers believe that it is located near the Sun. To date, there is no officially accepted ephemeris to calculate its position, and there are varying opinions as to Vulcan's actual distance from the Sun. The astrological software package Solar Fire, developed by Esoteric Technologies, offers two options for the calculation of Vulcan's position: the method of L.H. Weston or that of Dr Douglas Baker. [5] Note also that the position of the Earth is located directly opposite the Sun. For example, if the Sun is found at 9 degrees of Sagittarius, then the Earth will be found at 9 degrees of Gemini.

Some Ideas for Delineation

While there are 'esoteric' meanings for all the signs, planets and houses, the traditional meanings can still be applied in a simplified approach to a soul-oriented natal interpretation. We are not looking at 'negative' manifestations here. That is the realm of the personality-centred delineation. Of course, any personality problems or dilemmas are relevant in the soul-centred delineation, because they offer us an idea as to what is hindering or impeding the progress of the soul. The following are some suggestions for delineating the Ascendant from a soul-centred perspective:

If the Ascendant is in Leo, then the soul's purpose is to shine, to express one's creative gifts and facilitate leadership for the benefit of others. If the esoteric ruler, the Sun, is located in the 11th house, then the field of expression for the creative and leadership qualities is through group activity.

If the Ascendant is in Aries and the ruler, Mercury, is in the 6th house, then the soul's purpose is to inspire others with ideas, through one's work, through healing, or through developing techniques for self-improvement. This person may be an inspiring writer, counsellor, healer or teacher. With the Aries emphasis, the focus would be towards empowering and enabling others through their mental and communication gifts.

If the Ascendant is in Aquarius and the ruler, Jupiter, is in the 2nd house, then the soul's purpose of pouring forth the waters of knowledge for humanity, is expressed through a spiritual approach to gathering and distributing resources. There is a facility for manifesting on the physical plane, but the purpose is to gather resources for a higher or collective purpose. For example, this person could accumulate and distribute resources in order to fund some sort of group venture.

The esoteric rulerships do not cancel the value of the traditional rulerships. For the Aries Ascendant, the position of Mars points to personality problems, tendencies, talents and gifts, while the position of Mercury points to the area of service of the soul.

Aspects between the Rulers of the Ascendant
It is important to look at any aspect formed between the exoteric and esoteric rulers of the Ascendant. The ease or stress of this aspect indicates the ease, or lack of ease, with which the soul's purpose can be expressed. Using the example of Aries Rising, a natal square between Mars and Mercury suggests that this person may experience some difficulty in manifesting the soul's purpose. On a practical level, this may be because s/he has a tendency to communicate in a sarcastic way, or is bad-tempered. A trine or sextile between Mars and Mercury suggests that there is a harmony between the personality expression and the expression of the spiritual purpose. S/he may be an inspiring and enthusiastic communicator.

The Esoteric Meanings of the Signs and Ruling Planets

The following esoteric meanings are synthesised from the available literature on the subject. [6] The traditional meanings of the signs, planets and houses may also be utilised in a soul-centred delineation.

ARIES - to inspire others with ideas
Mercury - mind, communication; the 'Messenger of the Gods'
Keynote - I come forth and from the plane of mind, I rule. [7]
TAURUS - to release personal desires and attachments
Vulcan - growth through change; illumination and enlightenment; the 'Blacksmith of the Gods'
Keynote - I see and when the Eye is opened, all is light.
GEMINI - to teach Right Human Relations, between self and others, personality and soul, anima and animus, higher mind and lower mind
Venus - intelligent love; relatedness; resolution of polarity; turning knowledge into wisdom
Keynote - I recognise my other self and in the waning of that self, I grow and glow.
CANCER - to build a spiritual home and selflessly nourish others
Neptune - unconditional love and forgiveness; devotion and self-sacrifice
Keynote - I build a lighted house and therein dwell.
LEO - to express Divine Will through the qualities of open-heartedness, warmth, creativity, leadership and love
Sun - the self-conscious I; the integrated personality; creative equipment

AQUARIUS - to serve humanity through the dedication of personal energies to the collective
Jupiter - intuitive understanding blended with impersonal love; abundance
Keynote - Water of life am I, poured forth for thirsty humanity.
PISCES - to sacrifice the self through compassionate service to others
Pluto - the destruction of negativity and separateness; surrender of the personality to the soul
Keynote - I leave the Father's home and turning back, I save.

The Esoteric Meanings of the Houses
1st house - emergence of soul purpose, activities of the soul, the aura.
2nd house - spiritual values, use of life energies.
3rd house - mental energy, relating of higher and lower selves.
4th house - the foundation of the soul.
5th house - expression of spiritual will, actualization of Higher Self.
6th house - personality integration, service through healing and nurturing.
7th house - the path of inner union between the soul and personality.
8th house - the path of the awakening of soul consciousness.
9th house - knowledge of Cosmic Law and Ancient Wisdom.
10th house - spiritual purpose and responsibility.
11th house - spiritual visions, aspirations, spiritual groups.
12th house - unredeemed past karma, bondage to personality, selfless service to humanity.

Beginning a Soul-Centred Delineation
In esoteric astrology, the Rising Sign is symbolic of the soul's purpose and the path of the future. Look to the qualities of this sign as an indicator of new qualities that need to be developed in this lifetime. The house position of the esoteric ruler indicates where these 'new' qualities are best expressed. Try to also blend the qualities of the sign and house position of the North Node with these Ascendant qualities. Together, they form a picture of the future path of the soul.

The sign and house position of the Sun is symbolic of the present, or the path towards integration of the personality.

The sign and house position of the Moon is symbolic of the past or karmic conditions which have been carried over into this life and need transcending. Try to blend the qualities of the South Node with these Moon qualities to determine the path of least resistance, the negative personality tendencies which hinder progress in the present, and the gifts developed in past lives.
The signs, houses and aspects of Saturn, Pluto and Chiron, and planets in the twelfth house will also give further clues to karmic factors which are relevant in the current life. Of course, the entire chart can be viewed from a karmic perspective, but we have to stop somewhere.

The Role of the Esoteric Astrologer
The fundamental qualities required by the esoteric astrologer are the intuition of Uranus, the sensitivity and compassion of Neptune and the profound understanding of evolutionary purpose of Pluto.

I do believe there is an urgent need, on the part of astrologers, to move away from the excessive focus on the negative expressions of astrological energy and the over-emphasis on events, effects and manifestations.

The focus of esoteric astrology is on cause and purpose, and the consecration of the self to the greater whole of which we are a part. Certainly, we must not ignore the 'negative' tendencies and manifestations of the personality, for these are guideposts to the past and present suffering of the soul, and point to ways of healing that suffering.

But the focus, in esoteric astrology, must ultimately be on the positive qualities and the highest potential that the client may express. Too often, traditional and even psychological astrology, has focussed far too intently on the greatest depths that the client can reach.

As esoteric astrologers, our role is to act as a trigger or catalyst to help the client contact their own inner sense of purpose. And this purpose can most easily be identified by asking the client what gives them the most joy; what is their passion; what do they love doing the most? Joy is one of the supreme qualities of the soul, and to focus on what gives us joy is to attune to our soul's purpose.
