Venus-Saturn Aspects—Good Qualities You Wouldn’t Suspect

by Donna Cunningham

Venus-Saturn aspects are often given entirely negative interpretations, but speaking as one who has the conjunction, it gets better and better as life goes on. In my 70s, I feel more comfortable and happy in social situations than I ever have in my life.
Because of their stability, work ethic, and willingness to support those with similar goals, youthful people with Venus–Saturn conjunctions and trines often attract friends  among successful, slightly older people who then become mentors and protectors.
One reader asked whether grandparents played a major role in the upbringing of a Venus-Saturn person.  Yes, I often see that a grandparent was a loving and major influence in the person’s life, and that the person may have taken on some of the grandparent’s better qualities.
Love affairs in youth often involve older partners — almost like father or mother figures — who help them acquire a social polish that might not have been learned at home. (It’s an aspect that often confers upward mobility.) At midlife and beyond, their partners are often younger.
Not as trendy and fashion-forward as Venus–Jupiter or Venus–Uranus people in their sense of beauty, Venus–Saturn folks are likely to have an elegant, classical look. In fact, there’s an air about many of them that just says class. They often age beautifully — it’s those enviable cheekbones. They grow in poise and confidence as they come into their own, professionally and socially.
Venus–Saturn people might be rather reserved and formal, but they’re solid and steady, a source of practical support and sage advice when you need them. If you asked their help in moving, they’d have your move organized and a reliable moving company hired before you finished asking.
There is a kind of luck that happens with Venus–Saturn aspects, since Venus (along with Jupiter) is a good luck planet. Because of Saturn’s presence, there are windfalls due to an innate instinct of timing — being the right person in the right place at the right time. Then, too, you’ve worked hard to prepare for what you’ll be doing, so your good fortune isn’t entirely an accident. With breaks like these, observers rightfully remark, “You must be living right.”
Maturing with Style and Grace: The Promise of Venus and Saturn
Just as Uranus is the planet most associated with adolescence and young adulthood, Saturn is the planet most associated with the later decades, especially those after our second Saturn return at ages 58–60. Many of the women with this aspect seem to age gracefully, with a more chiseled profile, silver hair, and an increasingly elegant fashion sense.
Part of what makes this type so striking is the poise and confidence that come with having risen to the top of whatever hierarchy matters to them, whether it’s a pinnacle of career achievements or of social status.
In her 70s, Tina Turner continued to be a knockout — incredible legs and all — in her concert tours. Other female stars with Venus–Saturn trines whose appeal seems to grow rather than fade are Halle Berry, Nicole Kidman, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
If you have a Venus–Saturn aspect of any sort, you too can hope to get better as you get older, but if you have the trine, you probably already possess many of the necessary qualities. A classic style quite possibly comes more naturally to you than to most people, and the mature years are bound to be your best ever. We’re old a lot longer than we’re young, and there’s no reason that we can’t live and love and keep on growing for all of our years.
Who are the Venus-Saturn People? Celebrities  born with Venus and Saturn conjunct—the strongest connection between these two planets—include Matt Damon, Donald Trump, Denzel Washington, Ashley Judd, Vanessa Williams, Queen Latifah, and Sean Penn.

Sun/Moon Midpoint in synastry

When one of your inner planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) or important points (North/ South Node, Vertex, Sun/Moon midpoint, Ascendant/Descendant, IC/MC axis) makes a hard aspect (conjunction, square, opposition) to another person’s Sun/Moon midpoint, a significant bond is indicated.

The Sun/Moon Midpoint in Synastry

The Sun/Moon midpoint is a very sensitive point, which represents the synthesis of one’s ego expression and emotional energy. This point has been said to represent a point of “inner marriage” and represents our closest relationships, as it represents the synthesis of our masculine (Sun) and feminine (Moon) energies.

You’ll often find synastry aspects involving the Sun/Moon midpoint in the synastry charts of significant relationships. In this case, the planet person brings the Midpoint person’s feminine and masculine energies together, making them feel complete. The person whose Sun/Moon midpoint is activated is likely to feel more balanced around the planet person. You feel like you belong together, and the attraction is irresistible. The Midpoint person is generally the one who feels more attracted, based on this aspect.

Synastry Aspects

Sun to Sun/Moon midpoint aspects: The Sun person’s inner being and overall personality make the midpoint owner feel content and complete. The midpoint owner is likely to feel they have met the “one” in the Sun person.

Moon to Sun/Moon midpoint aspects: The way the Moon person expresses her feelings makes the midpoint owner feel understood and loved. The midpoint owner is likely to feel comforted in the presence of the Moon person.

Mercury to Sun/Moon midpoint aspects: The way the Mercury person communicates makes the midpoint owner feels comfortable and understood. The midpoint owner is likely to feel accepted in the presence of the Mercury person.

Venus to Sun/Moon midpoint aspects: The way the Venus person shows affection, as well as Venus’ social graces and personal style, is very attractive to the midpoint person. The midpoint owner is likely to feel accepted and in love in the presence of the Venus person.

Mars to Sun/Moon midpoint aspects: The Mars person’s sexual charisma and assertiveness energizes the midpoint person. The midpoint person is likely to feel more proactive and assertive in the presence of the Mars person.

Ascendant to Sun/Moon midpoint aspects: The physical appearance of the Ascendant person is likely to make the midpoint person feel attracted, as well as secure in their own self-expression.

IC/MC axis to Sun/Moon midpoint aspects: The career or status of the MC person is likely to help the midpoint owner succeed in their own career. In addition, since the IC is involved, the midpoint owner is likely to feel “at home” with the IC person.

North/South Node to Sun/Moon midpoint aspects: This is a karmic connection. The Nodes represents one’s destiny. When this aspect is present in synastry, the union is fated, and the couple has a past-life connection.

Vertex to Sun/Moon midpoint aspects: This aspect indicates a fated, karmic connection. The two of you feel as though you are meant to be with each other. This is likely to be a life-changing relationship.

Prediction in Astrology

Understanding the basics is very important in prediction.
There are various methods of prediction.

1. Progressions: One day represents one year in the life, using an ephemeris.
2. Transits: Where the planets are at in the sky at a certain time and how they affect the planets in one's natal chart.
3. Solar returns: when the Sun comes back to its degree and minute, a chart is cast for the entire year.
4. Lunar returns: when the Moon comes back to its degree and minute, a chart is cast for the entire month.
5. Solar arc progressions: The planets are progressed as far as the progressed Sun has traveled; one day for a year, using an ephemeris.
6. Regressed day for year planets: Instead of going forwards, these go backwards from the birthday.

To get a really clear, accurate picture of events that will occur in the life, one should blend all of the interpretations from the above methods. Take EVERYTHING into consideration. The more supporting aspects and such, the more certain that accurate predictions can be made. When an important event is about to manifest in one's life, this can often be seen in all of the above methods of prediction.

ONE DAY FOR ONE YEAR: PROGRESSIONS:
One day for each year progressions are used for the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and the four angles [the ascendant, midheaven, IC, and descendant]. The outer planets move too slowly for this particular method. The midnight date and the noon dates determine the 6 months for the year in question; this is especially helpful in charting the course of the Moon, as it moves faster than the other planets.

A day for a year. For example, if you are 25, count forwards from your birthday, beginning one day after your birthday to 25 days, using an ephemeris. If there are planets on that date aspecting your natal planets within 1-2 degrees orb, an event will occur in your life. For example, if your natal Sun [at the time of your birth] is 20 degrees into Virgo and you just turned 25, you count down the page to 25 days after your birthday and say you find Venus is now at 19 degrees, almost 20 degrees into Virgo, rest assured, within the year, you will be involved in a very significant love interest, relationship or possible marriage. With the online astrology charts, one no longer has to use old-fashioned calculations. The above is for your information, as to how this works.

TRANSITS:

Transits are where the planets are now in the sky above, and the aspects [if any] they are making to your birth planets. Again, if significant aspects are made, events will occur given the natures of the planets involved. Transits cover the slower moving planets: Mars [when retrograde], Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. In some cases, the Sun, Mercury or other faster moving planet can act as a trigger, but not as a major influence. Eclipses and lunations are also important here.

The degrees of orb are wider with transits in contrast to the 1-2 degree orbs with progressions. Orbs are the degrees the planets have influence. In natal astrology, the orbs for transiting planets are 8-10 degrees for the Major aspects: the conjunction, the square, the trine and the opposition. With the lesser aspects such as the sextile, the orb of influence is 5-6 degrees. The semi-sextile, quintile, and sesi-square have only 1-2 degrees of influence regarding their orbs. For example, say one has their Jupiter at 2 degrees of Virgo and their Pluto at 7 degrees of Virgo. This is a conjunction as the two planets are within 5 degrees of orb. There are five degrees separating Jupiter and Pluto here. Now, say if Pluto was at 18 degrees of Virgo, the conjunction would not apply, as there are 16 degrees between the two planets, making the influence for a conjunction too wide.

Remember, for progressed planets the orbs are tight: 1-2 degrees only.
For example, say Pluto is squaring one's Moon, indicating a significant domestic change. The Moon is 11 degrees into Pisces. Pluto is now at 16 degrees of Sagittarius. Pluto still has influence. I have found the closer the aspect in MOST cases, the event will take place, but there have been some instances where the event occurred when the planets were separated by 9-10 degrees. Therefore, Pluto will have influence over the above example's Moon until it is past 21 degrees of Sagittarius, and out of orb.

I have also found in most cases, a transiting planet approaching a natal planet within 2-4 degrees, even before it makes an exact conjunction with that planet, it can set off an event. Be aware as any slow moving transiting planet approaches within 5 degrees of a natal planet. If nothing happens, still be aware, as events can occur at any time when the transiting planet is within orb of the natal planet. This also includes retrograding planets. When the retrograde planet passes over the natal planet, then stations and backs up retrograde, when it is within orb of the natal planet, it can set off an event. The closer it gets to the natal planet in degrees, the more likelihood the event will take place.

SOLAR RETURNS:

One's upcoming year astrologically, always begins on one's birthday. The exact time the transiting Sun conjoins the natal Sun to the degree, minute and second, a chart is cast that reveals the planetary influences for the coming year. Further information is given by casting a chart when the transiting Sun squares [is 90 degrees] from, and opposes [180] the natal Sun. This will break the year down into three month parts.

For example say your Sun is 10'44"16 into Gemini. When the transiting Sun comes to 10'44"16 of Gemini, the exact time this occurs, a chart is cast. When the transiting Sun is at 10'44"16 into Virgo [90 degrees away], a chart is cast and is called a "quarter return." The quarter return has lesser influence than the solar return and basically acts as a timer for the events predicted in the solar return chart. When the Sun is 10'44"16 into Sagittarius [180 degrees away from the natal Sun], this marks approximately six months from one's birthday. I have noted in many cases [but not all], events predicted in the solar return often manifest after the transiting Sun opposes the natal Sun at 180 degrees. Six month solar charts have more influence than quarter charts, but again, this is not a rule. When the transiting Sun is at 10'44"16 into Pisces, you have the last three months of your year.

In a solar return degrees are VERY important, but most famous astrologers who write the books do not know this or much else on how to interpret them for that matter. The solar return must be blended with the progressions, transits and other predictive data.

For example, say with your solar return chart, the midheaven is 0 degrees into Taurus, with solar return chart ruler, the Sun [for Leo on the solar return ascendant] conjunct the Moon in the second [money] house. [New Moons in a solar return are very significant and indicate important beginnings], along with SR midheaven ruler, Venus in the 1st house, placing emphasis on the 10th house of career for upcoming events. Planets in the first house of a solar return place an emphasis on the events of the house they rule in the SR chart and also in the natal chart. Chances are, with the above influences, one will begin a new career.

LUNAR RETURNS:

Lunar returns are very similar to solar returns, with the exception that they are cast for one's Moon each month. Lunar returns reveal events for each month. The solar return has the most influence for predicting events throughout one's year. The lunar return will reflect the events predicted with the solar return, and often act as a timer.

SOLAR ARC PROGRESSIONS:

Solar arc progressions are good for progressing the outer planets, as they move too slowly for the day per year method. I have found these to be weaker in influence, than the standard progressions. The Sun moves a certain number of degrees each day. As with the day for a year progressions, count the number of number of days in age. Look to the position of the Sun at that date. It has moved a certain number of degrees. Add this number of degrees to all of the natal planets. 1-2 degrees orb still applies here and if there is an aspect/s one will experience an event.

REGRESSED PLANETS:

These are somewhat weak. Regressions are mainly used to reveal trends in past lives. You count backwards in years.

Progressed Venus

Progressed charts are calculated by adding one day for each year you are born to your natal chart. For example, if you were born on January 1, 1980, and you are now 25 years old, your progressed chart would be calculated by drafting a chart for January 26, 1980. Progressions show trends which set off major events in your life, and are reinforced by the transits you are experiencing at the time.
One of the most reliable indications in the progressed chart of meeting a new mate is to look at the condition of your progressed Venus in your Chart, as well as progressions to your natal Venus by other planets. Here are some progressions which indicate the beginning of an important relationship.
  • Progressed Venus to Ascendant/Descendant axis: The Ascendant/Descendant axis represents the “self” and the “other”. The Ascendant represents our self-image and how we approach the world, while the Descendant represents our one-on-one partnerships, including marriage partners and business associates. When progressed Venus makes an aspect to our AC/DC axis, we feel more sociable, attractive, and loving, which helps us attract partners into our lives. The same goes for when progressed Ascendant aspects one’s natal Venus. For example, I met my first boyfriend when progressed Venus was sextile my natal Ascendant.
  • Progressed Venus to natal Sun: This is one of the most reliable indications of the beginning of a major relationship. This is often the time when we meet the “love of our life”. This is also true of progressed Sun aspecting one’s natal Venus. Both progressions indicate a time where we feel most attractive, and thus our powers of attraction are most potent. This is often the time we meet our marriage partner.
  • Progressed Venus to natal Moon: This progression brings about a loving relationship which is often characterised by feelings of dependency, mutual support, and emotional development. The conjunction, sextile, and trine bring generally pleasing, supportive contacts, while the square and opposition often bring resistance and adjustments in regards to the direction of your relationship. The same goes for progressed Moon to Venus contacts.
  • Progressed Venus to natal Mars: This progression often brings about an intense, sexual union. Passion is at the forefront of your relationships. This can also indicate a time in which you meet the person you have children with.
  • Progressed Venus to Jupiter: This progression often brings about partners from a foreign culture. Events like marriage are likely to take place during this progression. This also indicates a positive time for socializing and making new friends. The same goes for progressed Jupiter on one’s natal Venus.
  • Progressed Venus to Saturn: This progression can bring about heavy commitments, and might bring relationships with older partners. This time is wonderful for beginning long-term relationships, such as marriage. This is especially true of Venus conjunct, sextile, or trine one’s natal Saturn. In fact, my mother met my father when Venus was conjunct her natal Saturn. My father is 12 years older than my mother. The square and opposition tend to have the opposite effect; it is a time of loneliness and disconnect from others. Venus has just moved one degree past squaring my natal Saturn, and I couldn’t be happier about it. The last few years have been incredibly unsuccessful in regards to love, my sense of loneliness increased greatly, and my social life was practically non-existent.
  • Progressed Venus to Uranus: This progression brings different, exciting relationships into our lives. We reject convention and tradition under this influence, so this transit can also be an indication of separation from a partner in favor of a more exciting, yet unstable, relationship. This is a time where your love life takes a “walk on the wild side” with someone different than what you’re used to. For example, your new mate could be from a different cultural background, or you may begin a long-distance relationship. Hard aspects between progressed Venus and Uranus are especially indicative of (sudden) separations.
  • Progressed Venus to Neptune: This progression can indicate the time when you find your soul mate. Your sensitivity and compassion for others increases during this time, and you feel more open to love in general. If the progression is a square or opposition, you may be deceived or disillusioned by a mate. The trine and sextile are generally positive times. Marriages often occur under this influence.
  • Progressed Venus to Pluto: This progression awakens powerful emotions, and changes the way you approach love and sexuality, as well as intimacy. This is a time when we are attracted to the taboo and the forbidden, and this can manifest through our choice of partner (i.e. falling in love with an “unavailable” person), or through sex (exploring sexual taboos with one’s partner). Relationships begun under this transit are marked by intensity, obsession, possessiveness, and power games. The sextile and trine are intense in a pleasing, manageable way, while the conjunction, square, and opposition can lead to extreme jealousy, obsession, and even sexual/financial exploitation or abuse.

The Alchemy of turning a square into triangles

Laugh in the face of squares or the squares’ boss will laugh at you.

In astrology there are various energies (aspects) that occur when planets and points connect (at particular degrees, angles). It’s the “Hey, I see you and I’m now deciding on what I’m going to do with you”.  One of these aspects is called a Square.

What’s the meaning of all this?

When we think of a square, what comes to mind?  Perhaps hard edges, enclosed, straight and narrow, balanced, equal, flat, lifeless, stationary, professional, covering, etc.

And for some reason, a square visualizes into a cube for me so if that’s the case for you too, what comes to mind? Perhaps a box, containment, a holding vessel, a stepping stool, an obstacle, heaviness, etc.

Sometimes a square is there to keep us safe, protect us and we are NOT meant to engage the aspect without a solid idea on how it will impact other aspects and a game plan to deal with the outcome of removing the obstacle; however, most other times squares are there to challenge us.  We are supposed to remove them and they will ofer up something special if we do.

Could you see squares as opportunities to help you get to a higher place and to become a winner?  That squares can compel us to achieve greatness?  To me, a square says that we have loads to offer the world and others if the ego would just get over itself.

You are NOT at the mercy of your square. A square is a rite of passage.  Have you / can you come of age?

Imagine this

Imagine a square is like a sci-fi portal.  There are two very different sides and all you have to do is be brave, take a deep breath, do something completely different, and walk to the other side. And because it’s different over there, learning the language and customs quickly of the other is important for survival.

Just like life, everyone has a boss and it’s no different for the square.  To me, the planet Saturn seems to be the most likely match as the ruler of the square. While Saturn can be quite the serious chap, he can also be the trickster too.

When I think of Saturn (mascot, goat), I think of being tested to see if I’m worthy of the gifts that the old man will bestow upon me should I pass.  I think of a challenging momentum and not to give up, even in the face of adversity, in order to achieve success.  I see Saturn as moving cautiously, slowly but with purpose.

Let’s face it!

I see the square causing fear because the other side is unknown, doesn’t feel comfortable, not what used to, often not traditional at first glance, and possibly taboo or lacking civility in some way.  In the face of a square, some people give up and say, “It’s just the way it is and I can’t do anything about it.”  However, once we overcome our fears, get out of our comfort zone, see what the other side has to offer, and discuss / negotiate options, we can achieve all the power and abundance Saturn wants to give us.  Until then Saturn challenges us to make the unknown known, the unconventional normal, the uncomfortable comfortable, the unworkable workable…

What tools and strategies will you employ to pass Saturn’s Test? A hammer? Invisibility? Pretend the square isn’t there and just slide on pass? Crawl over, around? Lobby Saturn to change the test format? Say to Saturn, “Hey, Can you please move that square for me? Thanks!”.
Laugh in the face of the square and after you pass Saturn’s Test remember to say, “The joke’s on you!”.

A Square turned on its side makes a DIAMOND!  The moral of the picture is to look at things differently.
I have a belief that no such thing as good or bad exists, only difference.
What’s in a square? That which we call a trine. By any other square would smell as sweet. Oh, I think Will would get a kick out of that quote mod!
In the Wikipedia Astrological aspect article it says, “Basically, the square’s energy is similar to that of a trine but it is intensified to such an extent that the energy is said to be stressful.”  I agree.

Two triangle shapes make up a square.
Split them up, they make two triangles (squished Trines).  Put them together, they make a square.
Make your square work for you.  Reap all the rewards and benefits from a square that you are meant to have. One Square makes two triangles or Trines.  A Trine is related to Jupiter. So that means BIG luck — the Jackpot, if you can successfully turn your square/s into Trines.
The Square is a HIGHER FORM of the Trine.  The Trine is wrapped in a constricting and protective Saturnian box.  Imagine the gift, the power contained within. The Trine is lazy; the Square tense.  The Trine privileged; the Square tested.  Should you choose to accept, your mission is to blast the box off the Square to get to the Diamond Mine of Trines.  Think Indiana Jones!! :) Think Zen Warrior!  Only those who can harness the power of a Square (Pandora’s Box) will succeed in receiving more gifts than one Trine bestows.

Turning a Square into a Trine/s

The basics in turning a SQUARE into a TRINE, Triangles goes something like this:
  1. Do the exact opposite of what you would normally or want to do. Do something different.
  2. Exercise discipline rather than restrict planetary themes and influence.  You know what I’m talking about.
  3. Channel the Trine sign attributes that reside next to the Square. A Square is 3 signs apart, a Trine 2 signs apart.  So if your Square is created by the signs Sagittarius and Pisces, channel Scorpio to replace Sag. Or Aries replaces Pisces to create a Trine with Sagittarius.  It’s helpful to select a sign that’s already in Trine so you can get the most out of the transmutation process.

120° angle. Four signs apart. An isosceles triangle.
Space taken up by a trine compared to a square. See the trine hidden inside the box? Also see the other two triangular spaces?
A square split in half, makes two right-angle triangles (trine-like) on either side.
Two trines back-to-back on its side.
Two trines back-to-back on its side and a square turned on its side to make the shape of a diamond or star! Once you turn the Square around, harnessing its power, you get two Trines bursting outside of the square – no longer contained!

Astrology and Tarot

Astrology plays a major role in the interpretation of Tarot cards and spreads derived from the spiritual current represented by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, an esoteric order that was founded in Great Britain and was active from the later part of the 19th century until the early part of the 20 century.
golden-dawnFrom this spiritual current four Tarot decks emerged: The Waite-Smith Tarot; The Thoth Tarot; The Golden Dawn Tarot and the BOTA tarot and each of these decks can be linked to four men who were instrumental in bring them to birth, respectively: Dr. Arthur Edward Waite; Mr. Aleister Crowley; Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers and Paul Foster Case.
The following blog post will discuss the relationship of astrology to the Tarot decks which emerged out of this spiritual current in Western civilization. While these astrological concepts may be applied to other decks, it is outside the scope of this discussion to attempt to accurately apply them to any deck not derived from the spiritual current of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

Applying Astrological Meaning to the Tarot Cards

The application of astrological meanings to Tarot decks derived from the Golden Dawn spiritual tradition is somewhat specialized and structured specifically towards the Tarot. It varies in some ways from the common meanings associated with astrological practice in the interpretation of Natal birth charts and should not be confused with Natal, Sun Sign, Horary or any other form of conventional astrology.
To attain a comprehensive understanding of the relationship of astrology to the Tarot, we must first build a foundation from which to proceed as we must first come to understand the meaning of the Ancient Elements, Planets and Signs as they apply to the Tarot.
As promulgated by the Order of the Golden Dawn, the Tarot system uses only the seven sacred planets of the ancients (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn) and does not use the outer planets of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. The outer planets have been grafted onto the decks by later interpreters but were not utilized by the Golden Dawn.

The Ancient Elements

The relationships that have been presented in this post can be of great value in Tarot interpretation within the context of reading on certain questions as, according to the Golden Dawn, they reflect the most fundamental underlying astrological energies related to the cards. The astrological associations with the Tarot cards are important in that they embody the expression of the energy and meaning of their astrological associations and express them in symbolic form.

It is of course the judgment of the Reader as to what weight to assign to the astrology of the card within the context of a specific reading or whether to use it at all.

I hope that this information will aid you in expanding your understanding of the Tarot decks emerging out of the Golden Dawn tradition as well as be of value to you in your own usage of the Tarot.

The patterns

It was reading Lon Milo Duquette’s Understanding Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot, that helped me with the last stages of understanding this system. It’s with full credit to Lon that I write this article.
Pattern recognition is the number one way humans interpret experience.

When an interesting experience happens; you note the pattern. When you see the same pattern again, you know what to expect. It’s the same with Tarot readings. The recognition of patterns is what allows you to make predictions. The more patterns you notice, the sharper your predictions will be.
The quickest way for you to understand the structure behind the Golden Dawn’s astrological associations, is if I gradually introduce some specific patterns, and systematically build upon them.
This article will start from the very beginning, with each new pattern building upon the last … until they reveal themselves. This understanding will allow you to use rationality to access your intuition, and predict when events will happen.

In the last article, I said I was going to change the order in which I presented information. Normally I’d explain why something works before suggesting ways to practice. This time I think it’s much more useful to you if I show you how to do it, before I explain it. This article is a continuation of how to use this system — not an explanation.

The first pattern to become aware of is the 12 signs of the zodiac.
There are two basic categories from which all the signs draw their characteristics: elements (triplicity), qualities (quadriplicity).

The Elements

In astrology each of these signs is allocated an Element — Fire, Water, Air and Earth.
The Golden Dawn then assigned that structure to the Minor Arcana like this:
  • Wands: Fire signs — Aries, Leo, Sagittarius.
  • Cups: Water signs — Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.
  • Swords: Air signs — Libra, Aquarius, Gemini.
  • Disks: Earth signs — Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo.
In astrology, the 12 signs of the zodiac are also categorised according to their qualities, or mode of expression — Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable.
Cardinal signs serve as generators of activity. A good example of this would be to look at the pattern of the seasons. The start of each season is brought in by the Cardinal signs: Aries brings in Spring, Cancer brings in Summer, Libra brings in Autumn and Capricorn brings in Winter.
Fixed signs serve as concentrators of energy (the middle of the season) and Mutable signs serve to transfer energy (the ending of one season and the start of the next).
The Golden Dawn assigned that structure to the Minor Arcana like this:
  • Twos, Threes, Fours: Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn)
  • Fives, Sixes, Sevens: Fixed signs (Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius, Taurus)
  • Eights, Nines, Tens: Mutable signs (Sagittarius, Pisces, Gemini, Virgo)

Cardinal signs

Cardinal Signs — Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn

Fixed signs

Have a look at the table below and see how many repeating patterns you can notice. Pay attention to the elements and qualities of the zodiac and the numbering of the Minor Arcana.

Progression of the small cards through the zodiacal year

The Zodiac and therefore the year, is divided into 360°. Each of the small cards represents 1 decan (period of 10 degrees) of the zodiac, and approximately 10 days of the year. Like before, see how many repeating patterns you can find. Also, notice how each of these patterns builds upon the last.

  2. Jupiter
  3. Mars
  4. Sun
  5. Venus
  6. Mercury
  7. Luna
This is the descending order of the planetary spheres on the Tree of Life.

Court cards

The Knights (Kings), Queens, and Princes (Knights) rule from 20° of one sign to 20° of the next.
The Court cards are fascinating. Notice how they bring together and mix the elemental, qualities (Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable), decan and planetary attributions.
The reason for this is the special tasks that the Court cards perform (in a Kabbalistic Universe that is). These cards are what allow the Universe to maintain itself; they were also responsible for its creation.
These are the cards that mix up all the other attributions so that they are forced to combine and interact with each other. This interaction ensures the maintenance of the Universe. Without these cards performing this function, there would be no Universe.

Conclusion

In the last article, Timing and Predicting when Events will Happen with Astrological associations, I suggested that the best way to learn this system was by using it.
I suggested:
  1. Deal out your favourite Tarot spread.
  2. Make the usual predictions.
  3. Pick some cards that seem to indicate future events.
  4. Consult the list of attributions below to see when that event will occur.
  5. Record your results.
  6. Repeat the process. Keep repeating and testing the system. See if it’s for you.
Now, I would like you to start noticing the patterns. Look at how the Golden Dawn attributed astrology to the Tarot; notice the logic and rationality behind it. Recognition of these patterns will do more than just make you a better Tarot reader, it will give you a sense of the interconnection of things.

Eclipse Aspects to Natal Planets: The Narrative of Change

by April Elliott Kent

Chances are, your birth chart contains at least one planetary configuration so dreadful that astrologers take one look and gasp: “How do you live with that?”

And you shrug. Because it’s like having been born with blue eyes or red hair: that’s the way it’s always been for you, so you’re pretty much used to it, much the way one gets used to a throbbing arthritic joint. A hypothetically awful aspect is your cross to bear, as Sister Rita used to say. But the very aspects that inspire terror in the casual observer are, potentially, your treasure.
Planets woven together by difficult aspects are as strong as steel. They represent problems you can’t ignore, and conflicts that chew at you until you find a resolution – or at least détente. They describe your defining attributes; and each time an eclipse scores a glancing blow off these aspects (about every four and a half years), you’re given another chance to become a little bit more … you.

So not even the most unpleasant natal aspect is inherently awful. And despite the unease they inspire, neither are eclipses. Some are part of a larger and more daunting planetary picture with global implications. Personally, however, we tend to experience eclipses most strongly when they form close aspects (especially conjunctions, squares, and oppositions) to planets in our birth chart. Each time an eclipse aspects one of the planetary crosses that you bear, a narrative of change emerges – one that is repeated over and over throughout your lifetime.
Unless an eclipse triggers these high-tension natal aspects, or falls very close to the cusps of the first, fourth, seventh, or tenth houses, you are likely to experience its influence as relatively subtle, like the flutter of a leaf in a chilling breeze. But let one of your more sensitive aspects get triggered, and it’s the difference between a doctor checking your reflexes during an exam and hammering an arthritic knee.
  • Eclipse aspecting the natal Sun: If life is a movie, the Sun is the protagonist – however flawed – for whom we cheer. Each of us is born to be the hero of our own life story; but often, timidity or false modesty persuades us to hand over that role to others. When eclipses aspect your natal Sun, you are thrust into the starring role – and if you’re not used to it, that can be uncomfortable.
  • Eclipses aspecting the natal Moon – From the moment we’re ripped from mom’s womb, we seek to reclaim the security and safety that we knew there. We feather our nests, stock the pantry with foods we like, and surround ourselves with people who make us feel comfortable. But when eclipses aspect the natal Moon, something – a new living situation, a change in health – may leave you feeling as exposed as a crab with her shell cracked open.
  • Eclipses aspecting Mercury: How do you define yourself? Usually, it begins with a name. Then, with your rank in the family pecking order, on the playground, in the workplace. Finally, numbers (grades in school, numbers on a paycheck) define you. When eclipses aspect natal Mercury, the god of definition, prepare for a change in your name, rank, or serial number – and for a change in how you define yourself.
  • Eclipses aspecting Venus: If only each of us were endowed with flawless confidence, great relationships, bountiful self-esteem, and oodles of cash! Eclipse aspects to Venus remind us that world will not always give us the treatment, whether kind or cruel, that we think we deserve.
  • Eclipses aspecting Mars: Mars is a trained, ruthless guard dog that answers only to you. He guards you and your home, defends your reputation, and helps you get all the cool things that you want. When eclipses aspect natal Mars, the watch dog is stirred up and straining at his leash; get what’s yours, but don’t let anyone get hurt.
  • Eclipses aspecting Jupiter: When was the last time you had an adventure? When eclipses aspect Jupiter, you’re itching to take a chance, to feel the thrill of being completely alive. These can be times when you overreach out of sheer optimism; but they are also moments when your life jumps tracks and starts moving in a new direction.
  • Eclipses aspecting Saturn: When eclipses aspect Saturn, you may feel worn out and discouraged. Probably, you’ve outgrown your life or are playing by outdated rules. But you’ll never get anywhere by blaming others for your problems. Regardless of how things got this way, what are you going to do to make your life better?
  • Eclipses aspecting Uranus: When eclipses aspect Uranus, you may feel like a misfit – and that can hurt. Recognizing who your friends are (and aren’t), and looking for a tribe that lets you be yourself, is the challenge of these eclipses.
  • Eclipses aspecting Neptune: These eclipses compel you to examine your blind spots, question your faith, and dispute what you previously thought was indisputable. If you’ve been fooling yourself – like a wife who ignores the signs that her husband has strayed, or the man who is disillusioned by his womanizing guru – these eclipses can deliver a wakeup call.
  • Eclipses aspecting Pluto: In each of us, there is a dark side. There are feelings that are unworthy of us – rage, jealousy, fear, covetousness. They weaken us, making us slaves to our emotions and to people who are more self-possessed. When eclipses aspect Pluto, we meet that dark self and the others who embody it for us, grappling with power and the need for control.
Combine these descriptions to better understand the sensitive points in your own chart that will be awakened by the upcoming eclipses on April 15, 2014 (lunar eclipse at 25.16 Libra) and April 28, 2014 (solar eclipse at 8.52 Taurus). If a planet in your birth chart, or the Ascendant/Midheaven, falls:
  • between about 21 to 29 degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra, or Capricorn (April 15), or
  • between about 5 and 14 degrees of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, or Aquarius (April 28)
your reflexes will be working overtime… and that arthritic knee is going to be really, really sore.
