Natal Midheaven in Sagittarius

(Bernice Grebner)

First Decanate (Sagittarius-Sagittarius): These visionaries are lucky in their choice of vocations and setting of goals. They are best in a travelling job, for they are using their restless, wandering-type natures creatively rather than in a nonproductive way. They are also good counselors. Their ideas are expansive and, because they are, the natives are bound to advance.

With Gemini-Gemini on the IC, the person is influenced not to stay in one place too long but to move around from home to home. If he does stay in one place, he may not be in that home very much. This 4th house Gemini likes people and prefers to live among a wide variety. This can give more than one home at the same time (this is the ideal). It may give brothers and sisters living in the same home (after marriage, that is), or the sisters and brothers visit a lot, so it seems as if they live there.

Second Decanate (Sagittarius-Aries): They have a certain amount of luck and, by exerting much energy along with it, they succeed and acquire quite a bit of money. However, they spend it pretty fast. They are out in the open with beliefs, and are desirous that faith should inspire others to do something special.

With Gemini-Libra on the IC, the mental indecisions come in connection with a home and the domestic life. They want homes very much but cannot make up their minds where they are happy. They need only the proper balance, but can't seem to find this balance. Although they seem quiet and peaceful, they are not. There can be too much emphasis on the partner's finances and what the partner contributes to domestic expenses or how much the partner spends.

Third Decanate (Sagittarius-Leo): They have big ideas, but their hearts must be in their careers or they don't do as well. If they can have strong leadership roles, they will put everything they have into their work. They are charming and know how to attract people to them because they know just what to say. They think big, and usually get big results. The vocation may require travel, but behind every business trip you can bet there will be fun and games included.

With Gemini-Aquarius on the IC, they are restless to the core of their being and like to move from place to place. They like to rebel against tradition. They can be very radical. They renew themselves easily through liberal ideas. They are not bound by crystallized opinions that keep others in bondage. At their soul's point they are free. Their hang-ups may be their friends; perhaps they are driven by an insatiable urge, which makes them feel as if they never have enough comradery in their homes.

(Frances Sakoian and Louis Acker)

These people can succeed as executives who have a great deal of vision, but they are not always practical. They often work in the fields of education, religion, and travel, achieving fame in these areas through their religious and spiritual accomplishments. They are likely to be considered philanthropists and are generous in their professional contacts.

With Gemini on the IC, these people travel a good deal and often change their residence. They have a tendency to establish two homes. There is usually a large library in the home. They communicate extensively with family mambers and give a great deal of thought to domestic affairs.

(Dane Rudhyar)

Gemini at the cusp of the fourth house tends to provide changing situations while the process of personality integration takes place. The tree of personality may be like a palm tree or a sequoia with a very wide and extensive network of roots not far below the surface, instead of a deep-reaching taproot. Concentration on very basic feelings may be somewhat difficult. The individual may have antennae feeling for multiple impacts and stimuli for growth, rather than a solid and secure realization of what he actually is and stands for as a person. The danger is for a strong and clever ego to develop as the efficient and perhaps proud organizer of complex life experiences.

Much depends in such a case on the sign at the Ascendant. In most instances it will be either Aquarius or Pisces; only in the far north could it be Capricorn, a steadying influence. An Aquarius Ascendant may stress idealism and / or social discontent; a Pisces Ascendant would tend to give a touch of transcendance and perhaps psychic instability to the Gemini foundation of the personality. And the positions of planets in the fourth house could considerably modify and polarize the typical Gemini characteristics, either adding restlessness or stabilizing the intellectual structures upon which the person depends for inner security.

(Jeanne Avery)

With the luckiest planet in the zodiac ruling the tenth house of career, the Sagittarius MC person can have great good fortune in areas of public life. Jupiter is the planet that is associated with enthusiasm, humor, sales, wealth, wealth of spirit, and good luck. Sagittarius on the cusp of the tenth house describes optimism and the constant need for goals and challenges in career matters. There is a strong possibility that one with this Midheaven will have several careers in one lifetime, as he becomes bored if a challenge is missing. If he can find an occupation that he cannot conquer completely, he will be successful.

When Jupiter is well aspected in an individual chart, the photographs he took of the parent of the same sex describe a happy-go-lucky parent, optimistic, perhaps religious, wealthy financially or wealthy of spirit. He sees that parent as one who is successful as a result of contagious enthusiasm and optimism. If Jupiter is not well aspected, the parent may have had severe disappointments in life that precondition the normal optimism of the personality. Since there is strong identification with the parent of the same sex in choice of career, it can be important to realize how devastatingly a parent's disappointment in the career arena can affect this person. In this event, the Sagittarius MC person may hesitate to be truly successful, in order to remain on the same level as that parent.

With a strongly aspected Jupiter, the parent encouraged the child to set goals and express enthusiasm in public life. If not, the parent may have inadvertently warned the Sagittarius MC personality about the danger of disappointment. In the positive sense, the relationship between parent and child was happy, optimistic, philosophical, and enjoyable. With a difficult Jupiter, the Pisces personality may have experienced great disappointment from that parent.

A certain degree of spirituality, perspective, or vision and hopefulness is necessary for involvement in film or theatre.

Home life, later life, and the parent of the opposite sex are described by the fourth house in a chart. With Gemini ruling here, the individual photographs the parent of the opposite sex as being especially witty, verbal, interesting, and exciting intellectually. Depending on the aspects to the planet Mercury in the individual chart, he will either have exceptionally good communication with that parent, respecting his or her ideas and thoughts, or have disagreements.

The planet Mercury, ruler of Gemini, is the planet associated with the adult ego state, in terms of Transactional Analysis. The adult part of oneself is the fact collector, with clear thoughts and ideas to be expressed. Strong opinions can be associated with the planet Mercury, as well as any intellectual activity such as writing, analyzing, researching, or studying. If that planet is well aspected in a natal chart, the association with the parent of the opposite sex is mentally stimulating, with shared ideas and witty discussions. The joy of the exchange of opinions and ideas leads to a later desire to have a home where ideas and thoughts are shared and examined.

If Mercury is not well aspected, the potential for disagreement with that parent is strong, and photographs of that parent are apt to focus on mental stress, flightiness, and criticism. If Mercury is badly aspected to Saturn, for instance, the parent may tend to think negatively, or be insecure about his or her intelligence. If Mercury and Mars are in difficult configuration, the parent may be sarcastic or caustic in discussions or with expressing views. When the Moon and Mercury are badly aspected, there is a tendency to speak and think emotionally or with lack of precision or clarity. Difficult combinations between Mercury and Jupiter can bring about a tendency to say too much, oversell, or promise more than can be delivered.

Whe Mercury and the planet Uranus are not in good aspect, there is potential mental stress for the parent of the opposite sex. He or she may have an erratic way of speaking, with thought and ideas tumbling forth in jumbled profusion. In extreme cases, the parent may have feared a mental breakdown at some point in his or her life. Too much 'electricity' coming into the brain may produce scattered ideas, rapid speech, and confusion in mental expression.

When Mercury and Pluto are in difficult aspect, there is a tendency to manipulate with words; the individual tends to say what he feels the weather will bear. The parent may have been a compulsive talker as well, fearing he would go unnoticed unless he poured forth a marathon of words. Mercury and Neptune in difficult aspect describe a tendency to overanalyze concepts and destroy dreams by nit-picking. The parent may have stressed practicality instead of encouraging the Gemini IC child to follow his dreams. These aspects describe not only the personality of that parent but also the quality of the relationship between parent and child.

Home life tends to be a place of activity with Mercury ruling this house. If Mercury is well aspected, the constant sharing of ideas will be stimulating and enjoyable, but if that planet is not well aspected, the personality may periodically have to get away frmo the overwhelming mental activity. Ideally, this person would like to have a salon where he could combine fascinating people from literary and artistic worlds, making his home a meeting place for the exchange of great thoughts. He will no doubt have a vast library or at least a special place for the books he collects. Since Gemini is a dual sign, he may need two homes in order to gain perspective and find occasional mental peace. One home may be more of a hideaway, the other a more public place. Each place may have a distinct personality of its own. The Gemini IC may find that his inclination to writ and express concrete intellectual ideas increases as he grows older. He begins to bring many of his idealistic views into clearer focus, and learns how to clarify many of the vague ideas that formerly floated through his mind. He can become a brilliant speaker or writer, lecturer or teacher. Mental stimulation will certainly continue all his life.

Midheaven Signs and Career Choices

The Midheaven, MC (Medium Coeli)or 10th house cusp is one of the most important angles in the birth chart. The Midheaven traditionally indicates career, status, aim in life and aspirations.

It's important that you look at the sign on the cusp, its aspects...then, it’s ruling planet in the chart and sign this will give us great insights.

As far as relationships go, this would indirectly function on a persons "relationship" social status and the planets involved and aspected...

The Medium Coeli or Midheaven

The Medium Coeli (MC), or Midheaven as it is more popularly known, is at the top of the chart. It is the point further south in the zodiac. The Midheaven point is the cusp of the 10th house. The Midheaven represents your most exposed position, your public demeanor, and how you present yourself to the world at large. This position is associated with the career and with that for which you strive to achieve. Many planets in this sector may show that much of your activities receive attention. You get credit (or blame) for your actions.

It could be said that the Midheaven sign represents our life goal; the ascendant sign represents our way of achieving that goal, or our unconscious strategy for attaining it.

Whilst the Midheaven is traditionally thought of as indicating a goal in terms of career or working life, it is not confined to this type of goal, and can indicate very personal or spiritual goals too. The individual will identify with and admire the qualities of the sign on the Midheaven, whether or not they actually have those qualities themselves.

Midheaven Signs and Career Choices

When an astrologer offers career guidance to someone, the Midheaven is certainly not the only factor to be taken into consideration. We cannot look at a Midheaven sign and say "Oh yes, you need to go and become an accountant"! Looking at the Midheaven sign does give us an indication of the type of career the individual would *like* to have - although whether this is possible/practical would need to be assessed through a careful look at the rest of the natal chart in detail.

Bearing this in mind, let's take a brief look at the types of work and careers associated with each Midheaven sign:

Aries Midheaven: Requires freedom in a career, would not be well suited to strict routine. Noisy, dirty or dangerous environments are not a problem for this person. Strong spirit of enterprise means that this is a good placement for self-employment, although foolish impulsive risks may be taken. Typical career routes include electronics, mechanics, the armed forces, fitness instruction, engineering, self-employment in the IT industry.

Taurus Midheaven: Needs some kind of steady career path in order to function best. Irregular income is frightening. Open air careers appeal. Typical career routes include sports, horticulture or agriculture, financial management, food industry, accountancy, building, banking, singing, physiotherapy.

Gemini Midheaven: Communication is the key to a fulfilling career, but these people need a lot of variety and stimulation. Not overly ambitious. Typical career routes include sales, the media, writing, advertising, retailing, youth work, the hotel industry, interpreting/translation, teaching.

Cancer Midheaven: Requires some continuity in career, as there is a dislike of change. Shrewd business sense is either present or aspired to, but money is not the principle motivation in career. Typical career routes include nursing and the 'caring' professions, social work, restaurant trade, historian, architecture, child care industry.

Leo Midheaven: Likes to be the centre of attention in their career, but will not tolerate difficult conditions. Ambitious and financially motivated, although much happier when they have an emotional attachment to work too. Typical career routes include acting, performing, any artistic work, luxury trades, banking, fashion industry, medical profession, politics or local government, work with animals.

Virgo Midheaven: Tends to hide light behind a bushel. Work best as an 'assistant' rather than a 'leader', although will often be the real power behind a throne. Typical career routes include secretarial/personal assistant work, literary/publishing industry, administration or management of any kind, health club/leisure centre management, journalism, copywriting, psychology, the police, librarian, civil servant.

Libra Midheaven: Comfortable working conditions are a must, and this position is motivated by money. Peacemaker of the office. Typical career routes include the fashion and beauty industry, soft furnishing or interior design, antiques, diplomatic corps, the legal profession, language work, modeling.

Scorpio Midheaven: Of all signs, this position most requires emotional involvement in the career. Money motivation just won't do. Needs career security. Typical career routes include the armed forces, police, detective or forensic science work, investigative journalism, mining, self employment, research of any kind, medical profession, funeral industry, psychotherapist.

Sagittarius Midheaven: Needs to be challenged, not very good with routine. Not particularly money motivated, but is ambitious. Difficult working conditions usually no problem. Typical career routes include the legal profession, outdoor sports, veterinary profession, travel industry, export industry, university lecturer, town planning, space industry, airline industry, the church.

Capricorn Midheaven: Very ambitious for status, rather than necessarily for money. Quintessential self-made businessman. Typical career routes include self employment, politics, estate agency, farming, orthopedics, homeopathy, engineering, exploration industry, dentistry, sculpting, civil service, stock broking.

Aquarius Midheaven: Need absolute freedom in their career, and need, above all, to be able to be innovative. Not particularly motivated by money. Typical career routes include cutting edge technology, space industry, airline industry, IT industry, optician, conservation, television work, photography, humanitarian work, publishing, the legal profession, telecommunications.

Pisces Midheaven: Often to be found working tirelessly in the background. Exceptional counseling abilities. Needs variety. Typical career routes include the caring professions (particularly the most emotionally demanding ones), work with the disadvantaged, the music industry, anything artistic, the wine trade, the sea or fishing industries, plumbing, the church, poet or author, the navy.

Example: Aspect to the Midheaven

Venus trine Midheaven

This configuration indicates continuation of the natives' careers and ambitions through the use of beauty, charm, and the social graces, which win the favor of people in important places. The harmony in their homes creates a favorable social atmosphere for furthering professional ambitions.

Performing artists with this aspect will achieve some recognition.

Mars trine Midheaven

This configuration strengthens the natives' ambitions and determination to rise to prominence in their careers. They are energetic and hard-working in their chosen fields. Thus by gaining the confidence of those in authority they win the means to provide a good domestic environment for themselves and their families.

Jupiter trine Midheaven

This configuration indicates a constructive attitude toward work which facilitates a rise to prominence in the native's chosen profession. His honesty and sincerity will gain the goodwill of people in positions of power, who in turn will help him further his ambitions. This aspect is especially favorable for a career in law or in the ministry.

Professional success ensures the wherewithal for a happy, secure domestic life. The natives love their families and have a positive attitude toward family members.

Uranus square Midheaven

This square indicates the natives' lack of ability to conform to professional or domestic routines. There is rebellion against authority - whether parents, an immediate superior, employers, or the government. The natives change jobs and residences frequently, and not always for sound or valid reasons.

There is also impatience with family responsabilities, and sometimes a tendency to use the home as a camping ground for the eccentric friends. The typical hippie pad is characteristic of this aspect.

Pluto square Midheaven

This square indicates a situation in which the desire to transform existing conditions can cause conflict with employers, immediate superiors, parents and families, constituted government authority, or landlords.

When the natives are at odds with their employers it is probably because they feel they know a better way of doing the job or because they want more power in the decision-making provess. When their revolutionary tendencies are directed against the government and social institutions, they can incur official disfavor.

If they are in positions of domestic or professional authority, they may display autocratic or dictatorial traits, which will usually cause disharmony.

Mercury square Midheaven

This square puts obstacles in the way of communication with the family, parents, landlord, and employer. It is especially difficult in professional matters, since good communication on the job is essential to success in any profession. The effect is stronger if the profession involves mental work or writing.

The Midheaven

This is the first post in a series about the Midheaven suggested by Elise, a Grand Prize Winner in Skywriter’s recent contest to find new topics for 2011.

For those of you who are wondering about your career and where it’s headed, the Midheaven of your astrology chart is the place to start. Today you’ll get an introduction to this important chart feature and the levels of meaning it reveals about you. It’s such a rich topic with so many facets that I’ve created a list of 10 articles about it for 2011.

I coulda nailed two proposed series at once by doing a post called Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about the Midheaven but Were Afraid to Ask. I won’t do that because the Midheaven is too important for a flippant approach.

If you’re new to astrology, you may be wondering why it’s called the Midheaven and where it is on your chart. In most house systems, it’s the 10th house cusp. It’s what was literally in the middle of the heavens at the moment you were born—the point directly overhead in the skies. It was at the zenith, the highest point of the 360° astronomical circle called the zodiac at that instant. In classical astrology, it was also called the Medium Coeli, the middle of the sky, and is often abbreviated as MC or MH.

Here are 5 of the most common questions students ask about this chart feature:

1) What does the Midheaven represent?

It’s one of the most significant features of your chart. The Midheaven is crucial in many applications of astrology, especially in forecasting career shifts and other life-changing events. It shows your career path, major goals, achievements, life direction, and your status or reputation in the eyes of the world.

It describes important dynamics in your relationship with your parents as authority figures, how you deal with authority in general, including your bosses, and what happens when you yourself become an authority figure to your children or employees.

Along with the Ascendant, IC, and Descendant, it’s one of the 4 angles of the chart. They’re like LIVE WIRES, in that whenever a natal or transiting planet falls near them, it is supercharged and very active in your life. Those 4 points are also highly sensitive to transits and progressions, which generally correspond with important shifts or events.

(NOTE: none of the other 8 house cusps respond in that way, as they vary significantly according to the house system used. The Midheaven is the Midheaven whether or not it’s the 10th house cusp in your system of choice.)

2) What is its Role in Vocational Planning?

Of course, the Midheaven’s sign and aspects aren’t the only chart features you’d consider. You’d include all planets and signs in the 10th, as well as planets and signs in the 2nd (the house of earnings) and the 6th (work habits and conditions).

Other factors include the house the Sun is in or a stellium, then cast an eye on what Saturn is up to natally and by transit. By that time, you may have come close to exhausting the many career possibilities each of us contain.

However, the Midheaven is the most crucial vocational factor. You’d especially want to consider any planets within 10° of that point in either the 9th or 10th house, because that area of the chart was shown by Francoise and Michel Gauquelin’s research into more than 60,000 charts to be the most powerful. (For more information, see: Gauquelin Planetary Effects – Frequently Asked Questions and Is There Really a Mars Effect? by Michele Gauquelin .)

3) Does my Choice of House Systems Matter?

In your astrology chart, depending on the style of diagram, you’ll find it either at the top of the wheel or nearby. It‘s the cusp of the 10th house in most house systems, including the Placidus, Koch, Campanus, Regiomontanus, and Meridian house system.

In the Equal or Whole House systems, the Midheaven can be buried in the 9th, 10th, or even the 11th house, which is the major reason I wouldn’t adopt either of them. You need to highlight the Midheaven’s degree, sign, and aspects or it’s easy to lose sight of important information about your life path.

4) Why is an Accurate Birth Time Important?

Under major transits or progressions, the degree on the Midheaven reflects the timing of important changes in the career or status of an individual.

Therefore, in vocational astrology, an accurate birth time becomes crucial. The Midheaven is time-sensitive, in that it changes by one zodiac degree for every four minutes in birth time.

When slow-moving planets like Saturn, Chiron, Uranus, Neptune or Pluto transit the Midheaven, a difference of as little as ten minutes between the real and reported birth times can throw forecasts off by two years or more.

In addition, if someone is relocating to improve career prospects, an error of 2-3° on the Midheaven may displace the lines on the Astro*Carto*Graphy map by a state or more. That’s a costly error, considering the financial and energetic demands a move can be and how much is at stake in the person’s career.
