Introduction

A man and a woman decide to get married, and in the first flush of excitement they might do a number of things: call everyone they know, make a pilgrimage to the newstand to stock up on five-pound bridal magazines, start fighting over the kind of wedding they'll have. But what an astrologer or serious student of astrology does as soon as the question has been popped is pretty much what my spouse and I did: We made a beeline to my astrology teacher to choose an astrologically appropriate day to tie the knot.

In my years as a professional astrologer, I've been honored to perform the same service for a number of my clients. It's work I've always enjoyed, much the same way that in a previous career incarnation I always enjoyed singing at weddings. After all, I was born with the moon in the seventh house of marriage: I dig weddings, marriage, love, all that.

But one of the main reasons I've always enjoyed choosing wedding dates for people is that it's so straightforward. The rules are simple and clear. Anyone with the ability to read an ephemeris can do it -- which I intend to prove to you in this tutorial.

Why bother at all choosing an astrologically fabulous date/time for a wedding? The premise of electional astrology is that a marriage, business venture, presidency, or what have you begins at a specific moment, and that within that moment are the seeds of how subsequent events will unfold. It's the same idea as casting a chart for the moment of a person's birth and assuming it will tell us something about how the person's life and character might unfold.

In electional astrology we determine (1) what moment something will truly begin; in a marriage, it's that moment in the wedding ceremony where the couple says "I Do"; and (2) what astrological factors correspond to making this particular thing unfold to maximum benefit of all involved. Then a date and time are chosen that will provide the greatest number of these astrological factors.

For the record, I rarely use electional astrology in my own life. I think it's best used for events of tremendous importance (like getting married, planning important surgery, buying a house), and I would feel kind of frivolous trying to choose the most adventageous time to, say, shop for produce. It's electional astrology of that kind that tends to make astrology and its devotees appear a bit--well, silly.

No Perfect Date

We might as well get clear about one thing before we go any further: Just as there are no perfect marriages, there are no perfect wedding dates. And even if there were, no one would use them because they would inevitable fall on a Wednesday afternoon in March. So, using astrology to choose a date for your wedding will be terrific practice in employing one of marriage's most essential skills: compromise.

Begin with Mercury & Venus

It's the Northern Hemisphere--specifically, say, Los Angeles-- so spring involves late March through early June. Glancing at the Pocket Astrologer (an indispensible guide) you notice that Mercury, ruler of contracts, will be direct during this period until June 3, when it turns retrograde (appears to be moving backwards). This is not terrific symbolism for a marriage, which is after all a contract, as it suggests that in time one might come to have second thoughts about the whole thing and back out. One exception is a second marriage, when Mercury retrograde's symbolism of "re-doing" can actually be quite appropriate.

Venus, ruler of marriage, will be retrograde from March 8 through April 19, 2001. One of the cardinal rules of wedding electionals is to avoid Venus retrograde if humanly possible. And ideally you would like to see Venus in a sign it works well in; say, Taurus, Libra, or Pisces. Likewise, you would avoid dates when Venus is in signs it doesn't work all that well in, such as Aries, Scorpio, or Virgo. Sadly, we do not have this luxury between April 21 through June 2, 2001. Venus in Aries is pretty much what we're working with. Comfort yourself with the knowledge that my own wedding took place when Venus was in Aries, and we're getting along famously almost eight years later. It's not the end of the world, and we can work to strengthen Venus in the final chart by placing it in a strong house of the chart.

By avoiding Mercury and Venus retrograde, you've narrowed down the acceptable date range to Saturday, April 21 through Saturday, June 2, 2001.

NOTE: In the years since I wrote this tutorial, I've adjusted my process to give MUCH more emphasis to a good approaching aspect between the Sun and Moon. I still avoid the Moon in Scorpio and Capricorn when at all possible, but I'll take a Moon in Aries in good aspect to the Sun over a Moon in Taurus square the Sun any day! (AEK, 2/07)

The Moon

Astrologically, the Moon in strongest in Taurus and Cancer. It's less happy in Aries, Scorpio, and Capricorn. So right off the bat we'll eliminate dates when the moon is in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn.

Next we need to eliminate times when the Moon is Void of Course. The symbolism of a Void of Course moon is that "the matter comes to nothing;" this might mean anything from unforseen circumstances preventing the wedding from taking place as planned, and if it does take place the couple may have a sense of being ineffectual and unable to formulate or reach mutual goals.

Now, let me say this about Saturday: it's named after Saturn. In many ways that's an appropriate symbolism for the institution of marriage. But it's a pretty heavy, difficult symbol, and can manifest in distinctly unpleasant ways such as feeling restricted or oppressed. I'm not saying no one should get married on Saturday. But Friday is ruled by Venus, and Sunday is ruled by the Sun; either of these days have a built-in vibe that's a lot more upbeat than Saturn's-day.

A moon in Libra is not the best of moons, but Libra does rule marriage, after all.

The Moon's Last Aspect

The next factor for you to consider is the aspects the Moon will make before it leaves its sign. Why is this important? Because a wedding chart will symbolically continue to unfold (as we follow progressions in a natal chart) as long as the marriage lasts...and often afterward! The moon, as the fastest moving body in the wedding chart, symbolizes how things will progress on a day to day level in the marriage. If the moon will make a number of fractious aspects between the time of the wedding and the time the moon enters a new sign, what we end up with is a marriage full of day to day disruption that can be quite hard on the nerves, and subsequently undermine the relationship.

These dates were chosen as most beneficial based on:

Mercury and Venus direct
The Moon strong by sign
The Moon positive by aspect
No fatal additional considerations.

Having narrowed down the dates, it's time to consider the time of day.

Common sense tells us a ceremony that takes place around 7:00 p.m. will give guests time to arrive and still wind up early enough for a decent reception. Since we run the chart for the moment the couple says "I Do", let's run the chart for 7:30 to allow time for the preamble to the vows.

Well, there are a few nice things about this chart. A fixed sign on the ascendant can be a good sign for longevity and tenaciousness in the marriage. The Sun is setting, exactly conjunct the seventh house cusp, bringing tremendous vitality and emphasis to the marriage. Venus is in the 5th house, which can be wonderfully affectionate and is a particularly strong placement if the couple hopes to have children. The Moon is past its square to Venus and applying to a nice trine with the Ascendant.

But there are a few real problems. I don't care for Uranus in the 4th house of home and roots; unless both the prospective bride and groom have very strong 4th house/Uranus natal signatures -- such as Uranus in the natal 4th, Aquarius ruling the 4th, Moon in Aquarius, Moon square, conjunct, or opposed Uranus -- I would really hesitate to give them Uranus in the 4th house.

Saturn in the 7th is a no-no, and it's already somewhat troublesome at 0 degrees of a sign. However, it would be easy to place Saturn in the 8th house by moving the time of the vows up slightly. And given so many couples have problems with money and communication, I'm dismayed by seeing both Mars/Pluto in the 2nd house and Neptune in the 3rd.


Libra rising is kind of nice for a wedding chart, and Venus, though technically in the 6th, is pretty darn close to that 7th house cusp. Plus you get the Moon on the Midheaven.

Mars is pretty close to the 4th house cusp, giving it a bit more oomph than I like to see in a wedding chart. And Saturn rules the 4th. Plus Moon and Venus are square each other, and the Moon applies to a square to the Ascendant.


I was feeling pretty good about this chart -- Sun in the cheery 9th house, Jupiter elevated, Venus in the 7th house -- until I got down to the bottom and saw (aaaarrrgggghhhh!) Pluto and Mars in the 4th house!! No can do; the 4th house is too important as the descriptor of all that is cozy and domestic in a marriage to put those particular landmines in there. Back to the drawing board.

Our next move is to get Uranus out of the 7th.

A golden rule of electional astrology is that the chart must have between 3 and 27 degrees of a sign on the Ascendant; this one has 28 Cancer rising. That could easily be tweaked, but we have another problem: Neptune is in the 7th house. With a wedding chart, we will not brook anything but lovely, happy planets in the 7th house. Let's get Neptune out of the 7th.

Neptune is out of the 7th house. The Moon is right on the Ascendant, which is kind of nice. NI'm not crazy about Saturn ruling the 7th house, especially Saturn at 0 degrees of a sign. But at least the Moon (ruler of the 1st) is not in poor aspect to Saturn (ruler of the 7th), which is another rule of a wedding electional, plus Saturn receives a nice sextile from Venus. In an ideal world, would be put Capricorn on the 7th house cusp? We would not, and I would be questioning this couple very, very closely about Saturn issues before bestowing this chart on them.

So it's not the chart of my dreams, but (1) the Moon is very strong by sign, by placement, by aspect; (2) Venus is conjunct the Midheaven and sextile Saturn (for longevity); (3) all the big-time malefics are out of the angular houses; (4) 1st and 7th house rulers are not in bad aspect, and though Venus and Mars (ruler of male/female) are technically square, it's an out-of-sign separating square; (5) Sun and Moon (other symbols of male/female) are in a nice sextile to each other.

Backing up to 12:39 pm, Pluto and Mars are both out of the 4th house. In fact, it's a pretty nice chart...except for Uranus, the Great Disruptor, in the house of marital accord.

Marriage Rules - Electional Chart

When calculating the time, remember the marriage starts with the first "I do!"

1. There should be no squares from the Moon and it should not be void of course. A waxing Moon (between the New and Full Moon) is better than a waning one (between the Full and New Moon).

2. Fixed signs rising are best when you want a long lasting relationship. Next are the Cardinal signs, especially Libra (relationship oriented), Capricorn (the need for any venture to be successful) and Cancer (nurturing). Aries and Mutable signs can indicate very short-lived situations.

3. A relationship usually works well when the ruler of the Ascendant (1st) and Descendant (7th) are in good aspect to each other, since they represent the two parties in question.

4. Try to have the Sun and Moon (portraying the groom and bride) in good aspect to each other.

5. Because Saturn can bring on limits or delays, it should not be placed in an angular house. It fares best in cadent (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th) houses or, if that is not possible, put it in one of the succedent (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th) houses. If possible, avoid all harsh applying aspects to Saturn, including the conjunctions. When the aspect becomes exact, there could be misunderstandings, feelings of neglect or sadness of some kind.

6. If you want the relationship to proceed in a pleasant fashion, keep Uranus out of the angular houses, especially the 1st and 7th.

7. The luminaries (Sun and Moon), as well as Venus and Jupiter (the benefics), should be above the horizon, if possible. Elevated planets are more visible and seem to bring a certain ease to the elected venture.

8. Try to have Venus (woman) and Mars (man) in harmonious aspect to each other, also Venus (love and partnership) to the Ascendant/Descendant (the couple); Jupiter (luck and growth) to the Ascendant/Descendant, the Moon (feelings) to Venus (harmony). In other words, a strong, well aspected Venus is very beneficial.

9. Avoid the Moon in Scorpio where it is in its fall and where it can be secretive and possessive, not exactly conducive to a happy relationship. A Libra Moon, on the other hand, works quite well in a marriage Electional chart since it seeks harmony and balance.  Strong and well matched couples seem to do well with the Moon in Leo.

10. The Sun or Moon approaching a square or opposition to Uranus may indicate a separation or divorce when the aspect becomes exact.

11. A retrograde Venus is not advised for any marriage chart. Since Venus only retrogrades for about 40 days every two years, it is fairly easy to avoid.

Buying and Selling Property, Moving to a House - Electional Rules

The Election chart to purchase property starts the moment you make the official offer to buy, whether to the seller directly or through a real estate agent. To sell property, the Election chart starts the moment you put the house up for sale, either  when you sign a contract with a realtor or when you hammer the sign onto your front lawn; some people who sell without an agent feel the chart should be set for when they
put a "For Sale" ad in the newspaper.

1. Follow all the usual rules for the Moon: positive aspects, not void of course and, if
possible, waxing. Cancer and Taurus Moons are particularly welcome.

2. In any purchase, the Ascendant and its ruler describe the buyer, whereas the
Descendant (7th) and its ruler denote the seller. Flowing aspects between these two
houses are very important for either a purchase or a sale, but remember for whom you are
calculating the chart, the seller or the buyer, and fortify that house (the 1st) as well as the
4th house which represent the property. Smooth, positive aspects between these three
houses (1st, 4th, 7th) are a must. In any sale, the Ascendant and its ruler describe the
person who wishes to sell, the Descendant explains where the buyer is coming from. Easy
aspects between these two houses help to make the deal flow smoothly.

3. Look to the 4th to describe the house or land itself. Try to strengthen this astrological
house and its ruler. This applies to purchases as well as to sales. I've seen some sales fall
through if the ruler of the 4th has only troublesome aspects or the Moon is void of course.

4. To buy, a fixed Ascendant is desirable, unless this acquisition is to before a quick
turnover or a short term investment. To sell property quickly, it is wise to choose a
cardinal Ascendant, if possible; mutable is next best.

5. In any Election chart, it is helpful to have the luminaries and benefic above the horizon
and the challenging planets (Mars, Saturn, Uranus and Pluto) away from the angles.

6. Do not sign papers or contracts concerning any property if Mercury or Venus are
retrograde.

7. Avoid having the rulers of the angles in retrograde motion.

MOVING into a HOUSE, CONDOMINIUM or APARTMENT:

This is another frequent request for an Electional chart, which is not surprising in the
United States where people seem to constantly be on the move. It does not really matter if
the place you move into is rented, owned or loaned, if it is a house, an apartment or just a
room...as long as it is going to be your abode, where you hang your proverbial hat for a
certain amount of time, it is considered home.

When calculating the time, Moving in starts with the first personal object moved into the
home.

1. Most of the general rules given before apply, with the Moon again being the primary
consideration. Therefore, avoid squares, be careful with oppositions and quincunxes and,
of course, shun a void of course Moon.

2. Your astrological knowledge and good common sense will help you determine all most
other factors. Since you want your new home to be pleasant and free from trouble, you
would like the ruler of the Ascendant (you) in positive aspect (trine, sextile, conjunction)
to the 4th house ruler (the home).

3. Unless this is a temporary residence, or for some reason you don't wish to stay in the
home for a long time, try for a fixed Ascendant. (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius).

4. Avoid Saturn or Mars in angular houses, and unless you thrive on excitement, keep
Uranus away as well.

5. Elevated luminaries (Sun and Moon) and so-called benefics Venus and Jupiter are
helpful.

6. Though you should not buy a house while Mercury or Venus are retrograde, it does not
seem to affect the actual time you move into the place.

The "First Meeting Chart"

As an astrologer and clairvoyant for over thirty years, I am always looking for new ways to predict the outcome of events for my clients, whether it be psychically or through astrology. Most people who contact me for a consultation have a particular issue in mind, and need to see a clear picture of what may transpire in the future. This often involves a job, a relationship issue, or a new boyfriend or girlfriend the client is curious about.

The traditional way of looking at the relationship between two people is through synystry, or a comparison of the planetary positions of one chart to another. But another more powerful, and far more effective diviniation tool is a type of event chart known as the First Meeting Chart. The First Meeting Chart is simply a chart cst for the moment we first meet someone. Within the framework of that chart all of the potential and/or destiny of that relationship will be shown. It is my experience that this is even more clearly shown than the aspects between the two natal charts themselves.

A First Meeting Chart can be between two people in a business relationship or a love affair, even a friendship. Pay particular attention to the angles of the chart to see if the relationship will be a significant one.

A good example which I can give here is that of the first meeting between myself and the person who took on the job of overhauling my website. In the chart Jupiter was conjunct the seventh house cusp, indicating a very positive and rewarding business relationship wherein both people would benefit. Mercury of communication was exactly conjunct the Midheaven indicating a very powerful tenth house relationship.

Pay particular attention to the Nodes in the First Meeting Chart. The nodes often indicate "fated" or karmic relationships. In particular, the north nodes seems to be ties up with "unions" and "coming together," where the south node is more separation or coming apart. I believe the first meeting chart is an overlooked resource in predictive work. Even when the client comes for a straight psychic reading, I always ask: Do you rememeber the time when you first met? Try it.

Electional or event astrology

Defining the first meeting chart

As a rule, relationships only start when the two people meet in the real world, therefore a chart be erected for the respective time, date and location. However, a very frequent situation in the modern world with so many methods of communication people may get in contact with each other by means of chat, instant messaging, email, phone, letters, SMS and may continue to write or talk to each other this way for a long time. There is no way to have a single relationship chart for reference until the two people actually meet in person. And it is this chart that is most effective in analyzing the development and outcome of the relationship.

Let us go through a couple of astrological tips and tricks for first meeting charts: whether electional or event astrology charts, they are delineated just the same. Just remember that in astrology the practical experience is invaluable and you'll get much insight and understanding by studying first meeting charts of people you know, having already sound theoretical knowledge of the basic principles of horary and electional astrology.

Some things to keep in mind while delineating or electing a such chart:

Moon aspects: Positive Moon aspects play a very important role in first meeting chart because, as they say, the first impression counts. In practice, it actually counts a lot, because usually if the first impression is bad, things don't get further... so that people might find out further than looks and behaviour.

The Moon aspects that are very good for relationships are the positive aspects to the Sun and Venus. Other aspects can improve certain secondary relational areas such as the Moon - Mars or Pluto Positive aspects with important influence on the sexual level.

However, Moon's aspects are not a reliable indicator of the evolution of the relationship in the long run. It just tells about how it starts. But you would certainly want it to kick off immediately.

Dignified planets are planets in their own essential dignities, of which a particular importance are the domicile and the exaltation. You may have all trines and sextiles in the chart, but if there're no dignified planets, but only planets in detriment (exile, fall) things will not go as planned, for lack of motivation, energy, desire... and the relationship will brilliantly fail.

Planets' strenght is so important. Any planet in detriment can be malign. As we're talking about relationships now, Venus is of a particular interest.

Venus is the love planet and we would want it to see Venus dignified in a happy relationship chart, but fact is that first meetings happen also while Venus is other signs than Taurus, Libra or Pisces and people are happy.

Just remember that Venus' position by sign and its aspects represent an indicator of the harmony and love in the relationship.

Planets in houses

Another aspect to consider is planets' position by house. Each house represents a field of experience for the couple and portends information on couple's activities and interests.

Of all houses, the 1st house - 7th house axis is of paramount importance.

In an electional chart, try having the rulers of the 1st and 7th houses as strong as possible (by essential and accidental dignities) and if possible - in aspect with each other or at least with as much (mutual) reception as possible - this will ensure that the two persons will show interest and there will attraction/compatibility.

In an event chart investigate how the two significators (1st and 7th houses' rulers) relate to each other by reception in the five essential dignities.

Angular planets talk about the overall outside conditions influencing the relationship. Two persons I know first met with Saturn in Leo in the first house in applying square with Mars in Taurus in the 10th house. Woman's father, a very proeminent person, never accepted his daughter's relationship with the man for political reasons.

This is why in an electional astrology chart for a first meeting, try having benefics (Venus, Jupiter) in angular houses and malefics (Saturn, Mars) in cadent houses.

Getting closer to the end of the article, I'll add that many times when it comes to plan a meeting there isn't much room for adjusting, a few days at most, so mainly the only things you can control are the Moon's aspects [and the Ascendant]. This is already an elementary level of electional astrology, so useful in our every day life.

Don't worry about "forcing destiny's hand" with electional astrology by electing a perfect electional chart for a otherwise lousy relationship/compatibility. The destiny is way stronger than our weak "electional magic". The better term for this is probably collaboration. Just do your astrological homework trying to make a difference in your life and let the destiny take care of the result.

Timing with the Moon

Electional Astrology - Techniques for Determining Ideal Days

The Moon is the fastest moving planet (luminary), and it is used extensively for timing in predictive astrology (in progressions, for example), horary astrology (charting the moment a question is posed), and in electional astrology (choosing the best time to do something, such as start a business).

The Moon changes zodiac signs approximately every two and a half days, and completes its cycle approximately every 28 days.

The Void of Course Moon.

The Moon is considered "Void of Course" when it doesn't make any major applying aspects before changing signs. When determining the Void of Course Moon period, traditional astrology only considers major aspects (that is, the conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition) that are applying. Applying aspects occur when the planets forming the aspect are moving closer to the point of contact. In practical terms, the faster-moving planet (when the Moon is involved, it is always the faster-moving planet) is at a degree that is less than the slower-moving planet. For example, if the Moon is at 25 degrees Aries, and the Sun is at 26 degrees Libra, the Moon is forming an applying aspect (an opposition) to the Sun.

After the Moon has made its last major aspect before changing signs, the Void of Course phase begins. Therefore, in our example, if the opposition to the Sun is the last aspect the Moon will make before it changes signs (in this case, moves to 0 degrees Taurus), the Moon will enter the Void of Course phase (at 26 degrees Aries until 0 degrees Taurus in our example).

According to theory, most activities should be initiated when the Moon is not Void of Course. Activities started during the void period generally don't work out to our liking, or they need some serious adjustment in order for them to meet any success. Therefore, if possible, one should avoid going on a first date, a job interview, starting a business or project, and so forth, during the Void of Course Moon. In Horary Astrology, in which a person asks a question and then the astrologer draws a chart of that moment in order to find an answer, if the Moon is Void of Course, we generally consider that "nothing will come of the matter".

When is the Moon Void of Course? Refer to our chart below for the current months. Notice that our charts show the last major applying aspect the Moon makes before changing signs (for example, it squares Mars). You can also use this table to see the Moon's sign for the months shown! The date and time the Moon changes sign is shown in the chart.

Electional Astrology using the Moon:

If you are interested in timing the initiation of a project or important activity according to a favorable Moon position, you should consider 2 major factors:

The Moon's first applying aspect after you begin your activity, which will symbolize how your undertaking begins. You should aim for that aspect to be a sextile or trine, and in some cases (depending on the nature of the planet), a conjunction.

The Moon's last applying aspect before it changes signs (shown in the tables below), which will symbolize the outcome of your undertaking. You should also aim for that aspect to be a conjunction, sextile, or trine.

In addition to the nature of the aspect, the nature of the planet that the Moon is aspecting should be considered. It will describe the circumstances surrounding your undertaking.

Another important timing factor involves the phase of the Moon. As a general principle, starting a project is more favorable during the waxing period of the Moon (from New Moon to Full Moon). Over the years I've been asked by countless people how to know if they're compatible with someone, as well as those wanting to know if the time and day they want to get married is important. This article explains synastry, the composite chart, and the importance of the marriage chart, as well as other factors.

There are several ways to find out how compatible we are with another, and where our points of harmony and friction occur. Many have compatibility and/or composite charts done for a prospective loved one, and these offer much valuable information. There is another crucial chart to have calculated before we marry, and that's the Marriage chart, done for the time of initiating the marriage ceremony. This begins the adventure, and gives new momentum and energy to a relationship.

The Marriage chart is very important, like the timing on launching a business, starting a project, or when we buy or sell something. A crucial component of success in relationships, along with resources, tools, and skills, is the best time for beginning a partnership, project, or new initiative. The branch of astrology dealing with launching things is Electional (or Inceptional) Astrology, and is an art in itself. Each moment has its special qualities and challenges, and it's always good to launch our boats on a favorable tide.

That said, it is equally important to remember that it is impossible to counteract "real world" conditions. For instance, you can plant potatoes on the best day of the month astrologically, but will probably not get many potatoes if you've planted in November rather than April in Northern climes. By the same token, you may get a great deal on a house, but if the house has plumbing problems, you'll still have to deal with them. And yes, plumbing (or electrical, or foundation) problems can be seen in the chart of when you first look at a house, as well as when you close escrow.

A compatibility chart done using Synastry, tells a lot about whether two people are suited to each other. This is where we look at how person A's planets fall in person B's houses, and vise-versa, along with the aspects between all the rulers of houses. It reveals many intricacies between people, and where common ground can be found, if it can be found at all. We're usually attracted to various planet energies for all kinds of reasons, some of which change over time. That's why we fall into harmony and disharmony for whatever reasons.

While compatibility analysis is extremely important and revealing of points of harmony and conflict, there are other important charts that give valuable information about two people's compatibility. One is a chart done for the time when two people first meet. Another is the composite chart. The composite chart is derived from the midpoints of the similar planets between two charts, i.e., if one is an Aquarius and the other is a Gemini, as a rule the composite Sun will be in Aries. And if one Moon is in Sagittarius and the other Moon is in Aquarius, the composite Moon is likely in Capricorn, the sign in between Sag and Aquarius.

The marriage chart is actually an Inceptional chart, in that a marriage is the inception of the contract of partnership. Thus it shows the past, present, and future of the individuals, as well as the composite unit. That's why it's important to find a time that is very compatible with the charts of both, and is compatible within itself. This is a specialized branch of Astrology, but crucial in the social-emotional realm of applying our craft.

If you know astrology, here are a few pointers to consider. In any marriage chart it is good to make sure that the natal chart rulers of the two people getting married are harmoniously aspected with each other, and if possible, the mutual rulers of each person's marriage house (7th house). FYI, "love affairs" are ruled by the 5th house, not the 7th. That's why even if one has a boyfriend or girlfriend for years but has never "married," then it cannot be counted as a 7th house activity. Contracts are governed by the 7th house, and marriage is a contract, both written and verbal.

The first marriage is ruled by the 7th house, as are all partnership circumstances throughout the life. The second marriage is ruled by the 9th house, the third marriage by the 11th house, and so on. This is the source of much confusion among amateur astrologers and novices at the craft, and the reason I ask people who come to me for a wedding date whether they've been married before or not. If I'm planning someone's second wedding, then their significator is the ruler of their 9th house and any planets in that house, and the 7th becomes more of a secondary generic influence.

Obviously there are many days where a marriage can be happy and last a long time. It sometimes depends on what time of day you're willing to do it, which is a consideration if one does not want to explain why the ceremony HAD to begin at 7:28 am on maybe 8:34 pm on any particular day. And what is good then may not be good done an hour earlier or later, due to rulership changes.

I'll close with the thought that even if a marriage chart has difficult aspects we may be able to create a favorable outcome if the foundations of affection, respect and heart-centered Love allow the Higher Self of each to come forth. Then we grow in Love and Wisdom despite the challenges we confront. We may not be able to control some events. We may not be able to control the responses of others. But we can always choose to see the Higher Way, since we are in fact, Spirits in the material world.

Marriage Horoscopes and - Hopefully - Your Most Fortunate Day

Marriage horoscopes are just one of the other inceptional charts that describe the potential of your marriage.

In fact, every (new) beginning, be it a new love, a new job, a move, a birth... can be judged by such inceptional horoscopes. Just draw a chart for that very moment of beginning, and you'll be able to delineate the innate disposition, development and outcome, out of this moment as a self-developing story.

So, with the marriage charts, set up for the exact moment when the couple exchanges vows and is officially pronounced man and wife, we can see how the marriage will unfold and develop.

You may argue then, that carefully choosing the right moment for such an important event must be most recommended. 

It is, BUT, experience shows us that what is not indicated in the birth chart, will not happen.

So, if your birth chart shows marital problems, you may choose all possible (fortunate) marriage horoscopes, you just will have marital problems....

This kind of 'determinism' may seem hard to understand, but remember for now that this knowledge is grown out of experience and NOT out of reasoning....

Nevertheless, some rules may apply as to choosing the right or appropriate moment for a marriage.

Among astrologers there is some doubt as to the exact moment the marriage is sealed.

Is it the moment of the vows, is it the official pronouncement of man and wife or is it the exchange of rings?

Resolving this question can only be done by looking at the deeper meaning of the ritual of a marriage. 

We may ask you, when are you married? When do you feel that you are married, that you are man and wife?

As marriage horoscopes are delineated as electional horoscopes, some rules are the same. 

Often astrologer think that they can choose a time when the planets indicate harmony and happiness for the marriage horoscopes, giving destiny a helping hand.

Alas.... there is NO guarantee that this time is the most propitious one.

 

Most couples plan a period (or year) within which they want to get married. But what if a year (or two or three or four,...) later there is a more auspicious period....

And what if you have found that the best time is in the late afternoon, on a moment there even are no marriage ceremonies organized...

Now to the most comprehensible rules for the marriage horoscopes (there are numerous more, but we'll only mention the most important ones, not to overwhelm you with information).

• Mind the position of the Moon! Some astrologers advice to avoid New and Full Moons. New Moons mostly have a hidden influence. Things are not that clear and there may be a lack of foresight. Things have NOT developed enough to start, so a marriage on a New Moon is not advisable.
  
  The Full Moon is more developed and visible to the public. There is maximum visibility and because of the opposition between the luminaries, this Lunation has the quality of an encounter (the Moon in the 7th - equal - house counting from the Sun).
  
  We, at Cosmic Technologies (CosmiTec) think that a Full Moon is a good day for a marriage because it signifies the culmination, the fulfillment of the love relationship and love-cycle. So, in our opinion, marriage horoscopes may contain a Full Moon, especially when the Moon is still waxing.
  
  And, last but not least, avoid a Moon Void of Course!
  
• Avoid (applying) squares or oppositions from the Moon to Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune or Pluto. These aspects are a burden, causing tragedies, disruptive events, separations etc. in the family.
  
• Avoid any planet in the same degree as the Moon's Node. According to the fabulous astrologer Ivy M. Goldstein-Jacobson this planet points to a catastrophe, casualty, fatality or tragedy, the more far-reaching when a malefic (Mars or Saturn) is involved.
  
• Avoid retrograde personal planets (like Mercury or Venus) or Mars. Retrograde planets let you RE-do, RE-think the matter (the marriage too).
  
  Retrograde planets may feel RE-stricted, RE-pulsed, RE-fused. Retrograde planets almost always signify or represent persons in your life that are hiding, shy or ill (This is a HOT tip!). But they can also RE-try and RE-evaluate.
  
  We, at Cosmic Technologies, can confirm that retrograde planets may cause some irritations, trouble and delay. You'll have to wait till the planet turns direct for a more fluent and 'direct' action.
  
• Try to avoid any planet in one of the following positions:
  • the 19th degree Scorpio: Serpentis or the accursed degree bringing sorrow. Things are not as they seem.
  • the 9th degree Libra: the position of the Fixed Star Vindemiatrix: the Star of Widowhood
  • the last degrees of the sign Taurus: the Head of Medusa, especially the 26th and the 29th degree. The 26th degree is the position of Algol, the most evil Fixed Star, causing to lose your head. The 29th degree Taurus is the position of the Weeping Sisters, causing something to weep about. It may (will) bring sadness and endings!We, at Cosmic Technologies, have found these degrees to be MOST important, so, indeed, don't neglect them - or better, DO avoid them in marriage horoscopes
    
  • the 23th degree Pisces, a degree of sorrow, sadness and unhappiness. It's a very disturbing degree that you MUST avoid in the marriage horoscopes at all cost! In our experience, this degree has brought lots of tearful events, aggression and fights. Don't make love a battlefield!
  • try to avoid in the marriage horoscopes the day the Moon is in the Via Combusta (15° Libra - 15° Scorpio, except for the safe degrees of 22-24° Libra) because this brings misfortune and illness
    
• avoid a marriage on the so-called "dies atri" or unlucky or ill-omened days. These days are said to bring hard luck, trouble, chaotic experiences, delays, restrictions and/or disturbing events. The dies atri are:
  • January 2, 3, 4 and 18
  • February 3, 6, 8 and 16
  • March 13, 14, 15 and 29
  • April 19
  • May 3, 10, 22 and 25
  • June 17 and 30
  • July 19, 22 and 28
  • August 1, 17, 21, 22 and 29
  • September 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27 and 28
  • October 3, 6 and 11
  • November 12
  • (December has no dies atri)
    
• Mind the position of Venus, the planet of love, relationships and sociability because, in marriage horoscopes, this planet becomes more important!
  
• Look at the most exact midpoints with an orb of 0°00'-0°01'.
  
  What are midpoints?
  
  A midpoint is a point half-way between two planets/points, it is the half-distance between two plants. This (mid)point may be occupied by a third planet/point or it may be in aspect to a third planet.

  Do you see how Jupiter occupies the half-distance between Saturn and the Sun? No?...
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  Let's make it more visible by deleting all the planets, except for Jupiter, Saturn and the Sun.
  
  
  Do you see the thick blue lines pointing to the midpoint? So, indeed Jupiter is located at the middle distance between Saturn and the Sun. This is called a direct midpoint.
  
  An indirect midpoint is a planet located in an aspect to the middle distance between two planets.Look at the picture below: Neptune is located 135° to the middle distance between Venus and Saturn.
  
  
  Of course, any astrological software program can list all midpoints in a snap for you...
  Exact midpoints are invaluable. They are SUPER important because they absolutely OVERPOWER the aspects.

Vedic Marriage Horoscopes

Hindu astrologers use some specific rules to assess the Vedic marriage horoscopes.

Let's take a look.

According to some Vedic sources the best months to marry are February, March, May and June. It's still unclear to us why this is so.

The position of the Moon in the Vedic marriage horoscopes is very important too.

The Moon should be in one of the following Nakshatras: Rohini, Mr(i)gas(h)iras(ha), Magha, Hasta, Svati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara(A)shadha, Uttarabhadrapada or Revati.

Marriages should be avoided on the following dates:

* on New Moon
* on the last five days before New Moon
* on the 4th, 6th, 8th, 9th or 14th days after New Moon or Full Moon

Most serious Vedic astrologers consider 4 important points before a marriage is contracted:

* assessment of the longevity of the partners
* mental and psychological health of the partners
* likelihood of different marriages
* Dosha Samya (balance of malefics)
* eventually (!), Kuta agreement

Contrary to what you will find on the Internet, Kuta agreement is just one part to assess vedic marriage horoscopes and just the very last part because it's not that reliable and way too general.
