Venus in elements

The twelve signs of the zodiac are grouped into four elements—fire, earth, air, and water—which represent four different approaches to life. There are three signs per element.  It is helpful to consider the element of the sign that Venus occupies in a person’s chart in order to gain more understanding of the love and relationship nature of the individual.

Venus represents, amongst other things, how people both give and receive love. Perhaps more importantly, the position of Venus shows a person’s perception of relationship and affection. What qualities and expressions of affection are people most receptive to? What is most important and comfortable in a relationship to a Venus in Leo person may not be the case for a Venus in Gemini individual. For example, while dramatic expressions of affection may woo a native with Venus in Fire, they may be a turn-off for a Venus in Air individual. Similarly, a Venus in Air native may find it easier to maintain a long-distance relationship than a Venus in Earth person, who needs physical presence more than most.
firesignsdesign-xprtVenus in Fire people (that is, those with Venus in Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius) have very idealistic, and often self-centered, visions of romance and relationship. Although generally lacking in pretension, these individuals can blatantly disregard their lovers’ dreams and desires. Venus in Fire natives often unconsciously write scripts for their love lives, and they do expect their partners to follow them. Otherwise they are left rather disappointed. They tend to consider themselves to be warm and passionate people—and they are! But it can sometimes be difficult to convince them that they are self-centered as a result. Venus in Fire need to breathe new life into their relationships frequently, which can be exhausting for lovers who prefer a smoother “ride”.

At their worst, Venus in Fire natives can be somewhat like vampires, demanding attention from their loved ones, getting it, and then feeding off their lovers’ energy! If their lovers appreciate the drama, then all is fine. Those less inclined to this kind of ardor might find Venus in Fire natives exciting for a while, but eventually exhausting. Venus in Fire people are generally rather blunt and direct in love, and they expect you to be too. Spontaneity, laughter, and grand gestures turn them on. Remember, they feed on energy and excitement in their relationships more than anything—and attention! Even those with more modest Sun Signs—such as Taurus, Virgo, or Capricorn—need to feel alive through their relationships. In fact, some might say that they treat their lovers as objects and extensions of themselves.

earthsignsdesign-xprtVenus in Earth people (that is, those with Venus in Taurus, Virgo, or Capricorn) tend to most appreciate solid, long-standing, and reliable relationships. Although somewhat cautious about entering new relationships, once they do decide, they are admirable for their ability to commit themselves. Venus in Earth natives feel most loved with physical proof of commitment. They work hard at making their relationships work on a physical and practical level. Unless the element of Water is prominent in the chart, however, their approach to relationships may seem rather impersonal and overly practical—perhaps even conservative—to some.

Venus in Earth natives are most receptive to solid expressions of love that are tangible and easily measured. Similarly, they express their love and affection in ways that are rarely flowery or grand. They require, more than most, physical presence, steadiness, reliability, and comfort in their relationships. Once committed, they quickly become annoyed if their partners demand proof of their love. They might say, “I’m here, aren’t I?” Perhaps it has a little to do with all of the energy they put into entering the relationship in the first place! (Venus in Earth people are generally quite cautious and often need a lot of time to get comfortable). Again, physical expressions of affection and commitment are most appreciated. Flowery romance and excitement are seen as superfluous or even superficial.

airsignsdesign-xprt
Venus in Air people (that is, those with Venus in Gemini, Libra, or Aquarius) consider communication to be the key “ingredient” in their relationships. These natives will respond most lovingly to verbal expressions of interest and affection. Sharing thoughts is, to Venus in Air natives, the most essential part of a relationship. They will be most turned off by partners (or potential partners) who are uncommunicative. Sometimes, these natives are more interested in what others might consider superficial gestures—the right words at the right time, for example.

In sharp contrast to Venus in Earth natives, Venus in Air people are less inclined to require physical presence and expressions of affection. As long as there is what they consider to be an open and flowing communication between themselves and their partners, they tend to feel nurtured, loved, and appreciated. Venus in Air people also tend to demand or require some independence and space from their lovers. They are often rather playful and sometimes flirtatious individuals, promising a little more than they can deliver. Expect lively, intelligent, and fun exchanges with these natives.

watersignsdesign-xprtVenus in Water people (that is, those with Venus in Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces) are most receptive to emotional expressions of affection. Although somewhat self-protective and cautious about making new social connections, once they are in committed relationships, they go out of their way to nurture and care for their loved ones. Verbal expressions of affection are less important to them than exchanges of feelings. Venus in Water people feel the need to “become one” with their lovers—they often consider verbal expressions of love superficial and are easily baffled by any demand on them to make these expressions.

Some may find Venus in Water natives difficult to understand, especially due to their sensitive natures and tendency to brood or become silent when unhappy. They can find it rather difficult to share their partners, requiring more loyalty than most. They are especially adept at feeling out their partner’s deeper needs and desires, and it is in this area that they feel most proud. By picking up their partner’s emotional undercurrents, Venus in Water people express their love. Some partners, such as Venus in Air or Venus in Fire individuals, will be threatened by their tendency to nonverbal communication, and they may want more. Others may find Venus in Water people to be too indirect and even roundabout.

If Character is Destiny, then focus on Character

AstroPsychology emphasizes character over fate for a simple reason: human beings have more control over character than fate; thus, character deserves the greater emphasis. While outer and inner reflect one another in a process of ongoing, reciprocal influence, real change starts on the inside. Only by raising awareness, resolving internal conflicts, cultivating positive values, and making good choices can repetitive patterns of outer experience be appreciably changed.

Early childhood conditions signify the first and thus prototypical event pattern that reflects psychic structure. Cognitive behavioral psychology holds that what is most important about events is not the event itself, but how we react to it; experience and experiencer constitute an interactive system. Of course, this does not mean that the environment is merely the effect of how we perceive it. The constructivist position that we construct a reality on the basis of our meaning attributions is only relatively valid. It is valid in the sense that how a person interprets events is going to shape his subsequent experience; his interpretations will influence his feelings and behavior, and these, in turn, will influence responses from others. In this sense, each person does construct a reality that conforms to his or her subjective world. That subjective world, however, initially derives from a pattern of experience starting in infancy. It is this original, objective reality that suggests an inherited karmic fate earned on the basis of past actions in past lives.

Emotionally significant childhood experiences – the prototypical event pattern – become internalized and subsequently flesh out the innate contours of a pre-existent character. Formative experiences are formative precisely because they are metabolized to become part of psychic structure. Organization of the self includes mental habits, defenses, beliefs, expectations, and representations of self and other, all of which begin in childhood yet are prefigured by the horoscope before any actual learning takes place.

Again, this formulation is consistent with his Jung’s theory of synchronicity and his definition of archetypes as having a psychoid factor, meaning they shape matter as well as mind. A basic tenet of Jungian psychology (and AstroPsychology) is that archetypes are non-local; they do not reside solely within the psyche as structural elements, but rather are inherent in nature as a whole. Archetypes are immanent and thus infinitely diffused throughout nature. It is precisely this non-local, psychoid quality of planetary archetypes that mediate a meaningful connection between inner, psychic factors and outer, objective events.

Heraclitus' famous dictum, “character is destiny,” implied that subjective character and objective fate were two sides of the same coin. However, unless this maxim is framed in a context that includes reincarnation, we are forced into a deterministic model: the assumption that planetary forces, or a capricious creator, or random chance (genetic and social) is the ultimate determinant of character and destiny. I reject determinism unequivocally, not merely because it is profoundly disempowering, but because the primacy of consciousness as causal reality is increasingly supported by testimony at every level of human knowledge, from spiritual to scientific.

We are creatures of fate, yet have the power to choose. This is the classic paradox in which astrology and all human life is embedded. As a paradox, it can only be resolved at a higher level that postulates an eternal, evolving consciousness that incarnates as character and destiny, fate and free will. Ultimately, the horoscope can be interpreted as a learning process that symbolizes the subjective world, the objective world, and the dynamic feedback relations between the two.

If we have the capacity to learn from self-created experiences, then evolution is built into the very structure of the horoscope. The two alternative views—experience as entirely random, or fate as completely fixed—both equally deny the possibility of a divine purpose in human affairs; the first because it suggests the Universe is indifferent to human learning and the second because growth is pointless if it cannot empower individuals to better their circumstances.

If there is one thing that modern psychology has established beyond a reasonable doubt, it's that people can and do change. We so take this for granted in the 21st century that it is easy to forget that the astrology of our forbears was largely based on the presumption that people cannot change; thus, all was foretold by the stars. This is a pernicious belief that must be dispelled.

The view here is that fate can be massaged in the direction of more satisfying outcomes to the extent that the individual learns from feedback processes that are set in motion by his own choices. The exact degree to which fate can be altered must remain speculative. Still, this is an infinitely more hopeful vision than those twin pillars of despair—endlessly random experience or irrevocably fixed outcomes. Perhaps the greatest contribution of psychological astrology is the idea that character is fate, and if we can alter our character, we can mutate our fate.

*************

Signs are not people. But whole horoscopes are not people, either. We may recognize that a real chart is a map of bewildering complexity; still, the map is not the territory. A horoscope is but a two dimensional approximation of a three dimensional, living, evolving, historical being that can only be truly known through discovery—in this case, discovering who the couple is at their present juncture by talking to them.

Because astrology is a powerful and somewhat magical tool, it is terribly important that we do not become inflated with our presumed knowledge. As Will Rogers quipped, “It isn't what we don't know that gives us trouble; it's what we know that isn’t so.” In other words, it’s what we think we know that is not, in fact, true that is potentially destructive to clients. Humility, recognition of fallibility, and openness to uncertainty are among the most important qualities an astrologer can possess.

Beyond that, I recommend that astrologers err on the side of hope and express faith that clients' can manage and integrate their most challenging aspects. Given the demonstrable human capacity for change, such an attitude is not merely optimistic; it is realistic.

The Four Astrological Elements in Relationships

According to traditional teachings, there are two elements respectively that fit well together, while the other combinations are more difficult. Fire and air are considered to be masculine elements that are related to each other and harmonize well, as do the feminine elements of earth and water.

Popular astrological partnership predictions, usually follow this simple basic pattern. It’s obvious that we can get along well with the signs of the same element. After all, we are in our own element with them, which means we look at the world in the same way. Moreover, we have a good understanding of people with the related element so that in this very fundamental consideration of the twelve signs there are six masculine and six feminine signs, each of which harmonize well with the others of the same group.

FEMININE

FIRE AIR EARTH WATER
Aries Libra Capricorn Cancer
Leo Aquarius Taurus Scorpio
Sagittarius Gemini Virgo Pisces

Whether we should take a simplistic approach to an essential area of life such as partnership is an open question. Even everyday language has two extremely contradictory opinions about this situation. On the one hand it says that “birds of a feather flock together”, but then there is also the following expression: “opposites attract”. So which of these two elemental theories should we believe?

“Birds of a feather flock together” is certainly a good basis for the friendships we cultivate, and for the experiences we have within a group. This is also where we can apply the statements about elements that harmonize with each other. By way of comparison, “opposites attract” is the motto for a relationship — or is there a greater contrast than between a man and a woman? This is why it is very questionable when astrological statements about partnership are made only according to this basic pattern. In fact, it has been demonstrated often enough that although we get along well with our own and the related element, such connections may not create enough excitement to keep a relationship full of life. Understood in this manner, relationships between all the elements — and all the astrological signs — are obviously possible without the difficult ones necessarily being any worse than others or even hopeless.

Since we can ultimately become whole only by developing the four elements within us, we must first understand the nature of each individual element, how it gets along with the other element, and how these complement it. In the following descriptions, each element will be described as if a person were to consist of just this element alone. However, there is no such extreme form, since we are all mixed types. One element is so strongly developed in each of us that we appear to primarily represent this type of element.

The Fire Element:
The Strong-Willed Individual
The fire person lives in a world of optimism, enthusiasm, and has a great capacity for exuberance. His courage in taking risks and a strong belief in himself are the basis of his nearly inexhaustible drive. He trusts the power of his intuition, follows his will, his convictions, and at the same time, likes to place himself at the center of all events. Attention is simply important; this is why he also does a great deal in order to be seen.

With his fire power, he may also spark other’s interest and enthuse them for his goals. This is how he sets developments in motion, gives dynamic impulses, motivates and spurs others on, and is a master at playing to an audience. His passion is expressing his will. This is why he loves the still unstructured future, which he can form according to his own will. He likes to risk the big success or new beginning, which causes the blood to surge through his veins. He looks for challenges and, even if he happens to fail at some point, he quickly recovers, gets up, and tries it again. For him there is always a next time, a new try.

He is the master of the beginning, yet his fire sometimes flags when translating his projects into concrete terms. Impatience is his distinguishing feature, and the time between the sowing and the harvest often becomes a hard trial of patience for him. Fire ignites easily, but staying power and a careful treatment of energy reserves are not his strength. Routine work is not at all to his taste because it leaves no room for spontaneity, and also sets tiresome limits on his urge for freedom and desire for what is new.

The past is extremely uninteresting and boring for a fire person because it can no longer be changed, even with the best of will. This is why consideration means little since he prefers to charge forward and wants to be the first. Believing in the goal is the engine that drives him on.

Fiery people prefer to actively intervene in life instead of waiting and taking what’s in store for them. More than any other element, fire individuals have a more difficult time tolerating inner tensions, which is why they translate impulses and drives into action as quickly as possible and work them off. This direct power of expression, the sometimes childlike spontaneity, and the uninhibited way of always claiming the entire pie has something very winning about it. However, the high degree of willingness to take a risk, the lack of self-control, and the deep aversion to any type of criticism — not to even mention self-criticism — in connection with fiery impatience can let some of the noble plans turn into an unimagined adventure that may also end with everything razed to the ground.

Fire with the other signs
Fire has quite a difficult time with the earth signs, although their realism, deliberateness, and objectivity form a good counterbalance to it. But from the perspective of fire, earth is simply much too slow, too boring, always coming up with misgivings, constantly urging caution and, on top of everything else, even demanding facts that the fire individual should substantiate. All of this is much too arduous, too unimaginative and dry, especially since it threatens to stifle his enthusiasm.

However, fire also has its difficulties time and again with the emotionality of the water signs because water’s lack of drive, connected with a frequently pessimistic keynote, could put out the fire. The sensitivity that sometimes lets the water individual be cautious and shy is often interpreted as cowardice by the fire person. Yet, it is precisely this opposite pole that could teach him to perceive what goes on around him instead of simply placing himself at the center of attention in a self-confident or high-handed manner.

On the other hand, air is the element that fans the flames of fire. Fire individuals love air types because the latter’s breezy ideas constantly give their fiery will fresh nourishment. He loves them at least as long as they spare him of their smart-alecky questions and don’t ask him to give reasons for his convictions. When ideas (air) and will (fire) connect in a positive way, this can naturally be the birth of some good projects; however, some things also just keep on being hot air or end up as a lot of noise (air) and smoke (fire).

The Earth Element:
The Realistic Person
The world of the earth individual is the world of facts, experiences, order, and structure. She values and relies on everything that she can grasp and examine with her senses. The earth individual does not warm up to fiery speculations, elevated theories are too unfounded for her, and watery fantasies don’t really appeal to her sense of reality. She will always prefer a bird in the hand to two in the bush! What counts for her is the bottom line, what she has in her pocket, and what she can take home with her. Earth-oriented people may be slow and deliberate in their actions, but they are persistent and have staying power as a result. Once they get involved in a plan, they will follow it directly and consistently until they reach their goal. Their strong trust in pragmatic values makes them the keepers of tradition and simultaneously suspicious of bold utopias. They value tried-and-true methods far more than modern solutions, in the same way that the past and present are more important than a fictitious future that is still unstructured and will ultimately always be unpredictable.

The rooted earth individual usually lacks the willingness — and sometimes just simply the necessary imagination — to warm up to the world of ideals, longings, or ideas. She lavishes care and attention on the familiar since this is what she knows and can depend on. This is why she loves routine and repetition, and has a difficult time with changes and innovations. Others are sure to have had a hard time with her stubbornness, lack of flexibility, and resistance to anything unaccustomed. However, when her need for security lets her hold on too tight to things proven and achieved, when she desperately clings to money, property, possessions, and reality, there is the danger of losing sight of life’s meaning and that all of life’s joys will be smothered because of her lack of inspiration and visionary strength.

Earth with the other signs
The lively, restless air signs sometimes make too much fuss for the earth individual. Without further ado, they too easily stir up her clear structures, constantly come up with some sort of lofty and much too modern ideas that don’t interest her at all. She cannot comprehend why she should get mixed up in such high-flown “mental acrobatics”, especially since theory and practice seem to constantly contradict each other here. She only values perceptions when she can truly do something with them. Having a perception for perception’s sake appears to be quite superfluous to her. At the same time, more receptiveness for the air world could actually be good for her, since the inventive spirit of air could actually bring easy solutions and make some things go more smoothly.

Earth has a very special problem with fire because fire has a carefree way of “burning up” all the reserves that earth has so carefully developed and leaves nothing behind it but scorched earth. The earth individual not only finds the impetuous forward-surging fire to be uneconomical, but also much too thoughtless in the face of uncalculated risks. However, the warming fire is good for the earth, since it can bring healthy excitement and intensity into her life through the momentum, joy, and constantly flaming optimism of the fire individual.

The Air Element:
The Intellectual
The air individual moves easily in the world of theories, thoughts, and abstractions. He possesses a quick grasp and nimble verbal ability to express himself. His need for contact and exchange drives him from one place to the next, but the desire for freedom and independence prevents him from spending much time anywhere. So the air individual approaches other people in an open and friendly way but usually makes an impression that is somewhat distanced and cool in the process. His train of thought frequently moves in leaps and bounds, primarily on the surface of things. These people are brilliant, informative, create ideas, impart knowledge, make connections, think in relative terms and question things, but usually manage to avoid commitment and depth, as well as emotional involvement. This light, lively, curious mood frequently leads to impatience, nervousness, and fragmentation.

Their inexhaustible interest (Latin = being in between) in everyone and everything prevents them from taking a clear position and makes them lightweights without a homeland. The future is the favorite playing field for their thoughts since this is where they can be devised and invented. Things that are new keep all the possibilities open and leave leeway for experiments and utopias.

Although the air individual constantly strives for clarity and objectivity, he may sometimes get lost in the elevated labyrinths of his own mental world. There he is like the comical professor who experiments in his ivory-tower laboratory with high-flown theories that no one would know how to use, even if they ever did prove to be more than a flop.

Air and the other signs
Air often has a difficult time with earth in the truest sense of the word. Earth’s unwavering sense of reality lets some of those lovely castles in the air smash to pieces on hard ground. On the other hand, however, this combination is valuable because airy ideas only become useful in the practical sense when they interact with earth.

The water signs are usually a closed book for the air individual as well. The world of feelings is too vague for him, he cannot comprehend it; it’s not logical, at best psychological — and he can only smile about that. Yet, the water signs in particular are capable of breathing life into his abstract ideas and making them more human.

The Water Element:
The Emotional Person
The water individual intuitively attunes herself to her surrounding world. Her antennae are permanently set on reception, which gives her an excellent sense of empathy, on the one hand, but also makes it considerably more difficult for her to draw the line against outside influences. Water people take in a great deal and in this process let themselves be influenced by energies and forces that aren't even meant for them. Their sensitivity lets them always know what the other person expects from them. As a result of their great willingness to react to other people’s wishes, these are the people with a thousand faces who are capable of appearing in whatever way the person with whom they are dealing at the moment wishes them to be.

In accordance with this, water people have difficulties in developing a feeling for their own identity and their own boundaries. Despite all this, it would still be wrong to underestimate their instinctive urge toward goals because nothing can ultimately stop water from following its true destiny, even if it has to make detours that appear very curious in the eyes of the other elements. A willingness to help, sympathy, sureness of instinct, empathy, and often a good deal of intuitive ability are the strengths of water, which is why these people frequently dedicate themselves to therapeutic tasks.

Although the water individual can tell beautiful stories, she has difficulties in expressing herself in formal terms and explaining something factually, since the world of sober rationality is not hers. She is much more at home in the rich world of images, of the imagination, and the soul. She is the born soul-doctor who can listen to others, be truly sympathetic, and show deep understanding. And she is naturally also the teller of fairy tales, the poet, the artist, or the magician.

Her sensitivity lets her be less daring than the other elements and sometimes even less able to cope with life. When the demands of the outer world become too hard, so that she no longer feels capable of coping, she often retreats into her own inner life or into a fantasy world, and hopes to somehow wrangle through on the outside. In extreme cases, this leads to escapism, stubborn denial of reality, a leap into the irrational, or flight into intoxication. Then the past, with its images, has a firm hold on her and her glance tends to wander more backward than forward.

Her soul gets caught up in memories time and again, revealing old, familiar things in intensive dreams even years after everything has long been over. Like no other element, water draws into the depths and only becomes calm when it has landed at the bottom. Water does not move on its own power. To do this, water needs impulses from the outside or, even better, a slant that gives it a direction, as well as a setting that provides it with support.

Water and the other signs
The water person values the proximity of earth individuals, who give her structure and security. However, this applies only as long as they don’t start to dry out her water by, for example, trying to suppress the inner correlation that she senses with their unimaginative factual thinking.

From the deep water perspective, air tends to be a superficial element. When air approaches are too cold and hostile, water shuts itself off by forming a sheet of ice and thereby preventing the coldly analytical intellect from looking into the depths of her soul. But where these two elements connect well, we can find artists who know how to express the images of the soul in words or through music, as well as the true spiritual helpers and guides.

Water flees from the hot fire signs. The combination steams. Water quickly feels herself to be overpowered or easily has her feelings hurt by the heated directness. On the other hand, the momentum of a fire person — his optimism and joy in life — can sometimes rouse the water type out of her apathy.

Each Sign Has Its Difficulties

We all know people who show us the negative side of their Sun sign. Aries attacks, Taurus is lazy, Virgo is critical, Scorpio is vindictive ... every sign has its negative side. The following are little suggestions as to what is going on inside people when they display such negative behavior. If we can understand how it feels inside, we will be able to choose a more helpful response.

Aries people are learning how to use energy, but they often get it wrong. They are glad when people stand up to them, because they don't intend to hurt or destroy. They need to be encouraged, or they can become unsure and depressed. They begin new things, or revive things that were thought to be over, and they feel the need to keep moving on to the next new thing.

Taurus people, at heart, are silent, preferring to commune with Nature. Being so in touch with earth energy, they can heal others with it. They can seem slow or lazy, but they need time to feel secure before they can speak or act. They tend to use no more energy than is required to achieve something, and they appreciate the value of leisure.

Gemini people have difficulty linking the two halves of the brain. When in the left-brain mode (rational), they think and talk well. When in the right-brain mode (intuitive), they are silent, not knowing how to communicate. They need to accept and express the imaginative, creative side.

Cancer people, by nature, feel emotions like waves on the sea -- up and down and up again. They need to be given time to come back up. Cancer people are part-parent, part-child, and need to learn to mother their own inner neediness; otherwise, they will get someone else to play one of these parts, and will feel possessive of that person.

Leo people present themselves as being much larger than they feel inside. It is easy to crush them with coolness. It takes much courage and energy to radiate so much, and they need lots of love and smiles from others to keep it going. They need to listen as well as radiate, and it is not easy for them to do both at the same time. If appreciated, they will do anything for you.

Virgo people criticize themselves more than anyone else, feeling that anything short of perfection is not good enough. They give themselves a very hard time. They often point out only the faults, forgetting to voice their more appreciative thoughts. They thrive on being recognized as helpful and will assist you if you tell them how their talents can be useful.

Libra people are afraid to upset the balance. When they have all the facts about a situation, they will recognize the best course of action, but not before. The only decisions they can make quickly are those that they know don't really matter, but deciding whether a decision is in that class or not may take some time. They lift what others cast down.

Scorpio people are emotionally vulnerable at a deeper level than the other signs. They use many methods of protection: silence, directing attention at other people, or being prickly to keep others at bay. As they explore and accept their own emotions, they become able to understand and support others through the worst disasters.

Sagittarius people may not be able to prove what they know, or say how they know it. Their imagination takes them beyond the rational, and their teaching creates a linking bridge. Their enthusiasm is intended to inspire others to make their own efforts, not to lead them. Their natural good humor can produce jokes that offend others unintentionally.

Capricorn people carry responsibility like a cloak, which is heavy during childhood, but feels lighter as they get older. Their innate knowledge of the physical makes their achievements seem magical. The pleasing results of their hard work matter more to them than emotional expression, so they often omit to tell people when they are feeling overburdened.

Aquarius people may seem cool, but they feel they are levitating over a sea of emotion that threatens to engulf them if they look down. Their detachment gives them wonderful vision, but it will exclude the feeling aspect of humanity unless they have looked into their own sea. Their strong attachment to principles can lead them to be hurt by others with different priorities.

Pisces people have no boundaries, which is difficult in the material world. They need to learn to create personal boundaries in order to know what they are feeling. When centered in their hearts, they can identify with spirit itself, which knows no boundaries.

EXERCISES

1. Check inside yourself to see how you feel when you express the negative side of your own Sun sign.

2. Ask your friends how they are feeling when they act negatively.

Astrology Signs - Negative Opposites to Sun Signs

It is interesting to look at the people you know in terms of their Sun signs. The Sun represents the quality of a person's spiritual radiance, if they give their spirit the opportunity to radiate by expressing the sign.

When a person's spirit is being expressed, they will show strong characteristics of their Sun sign: positive when feeling good, and negative when having difficulties. Positive or negative, the whole personality is holding together, and their light is shining even though it may feel uncomfortable to others. You would say of such people that they are reasonably well integrated, and there will be a light in their eyes.

If this is not the case, the personality will be scattered and the person will feel every obstacle as a great hurdle to be overcome, instead of being just the next thing to deal with. There are many ways of being less than our best, and they are all part of being human. However, when people start to behave like the negative of the sign opposite their Sun sign, it shows that they are having difficulty being themselves, operating from the heart. This opposite sign will be behind the Earth and is sometimes called the Earth sign. It indicates the personality without its spirit, so it is a sign of darkness.

For instance, an Aries person who isn't expressing force, energy, aggressiveness, or impatience, who is not starting new projects with great zeal, will tend to seem wishy-washy and indecisive; i.e., negative Libra. A Pisces person who is not being sensitive, looking after someone else in some way, or expressing emotions or reflecting the emotions of others, will often appear to be a cold perfectionist with a tendency to criticize; i.e., negative Virgo.

People who are expressing their negative-opposite state are very possibly out of touch with their Sun sign, and, if that is so, life will be more difficult for them than is necessary. Great help can be given in a chart reading by showing in a sensitive way how these people can change their behavior or thought processes very slightly, tipping the balance back toward their own sign.

When we are moved to help our friends feel better, we tend to go about it in ways that make us feel better, but each Sun sign has its own needs. If you know the Sun signs of your friends, you can, in daily conversation, encourage them to "be themselves" (their sign) more. Such a change will naturally lead to behavior that opens the door to their own spirit, which can then express again through their personality. Their light comes on again and life starts to flow more easily.

The following are some of the negative traits of opposite signs, accompanied by a few possible ways to bring people back to their own Sun sign. Many more ways could be found. It takes not only knowing something of the signs, but also a good knowledge of the individual character to find the right way for each person -- the wrong way can just make matters worse!

Aries, when afraid to act, or staggering from a perceived attack, can become negative Libra -- indecisive, worried, inactive, going on about different possibilities without enthusiasm, "Yes, but . . .", etc.

To bring them back to their Aries heart center, say to them, "Just do what you want to do," "Do it your own way", or, "You can do it!"

Taurus, when feeling unsteady, uncertain, or unsafe, or having lost a treasured possession, can become negative Scorpio -- angry, seething, hurtful statements, blaming, vengeful, etc.

To bring them back to their Taurus heart center, suggest a walk in the park together, a meal out, a day in the country, or a massage.

Gemini, when feeling unable to think or communicate, can become negative Sagittarius -- head in the clouds, can't be bothered to explain, witty jokes at another's expense, wanting to get away, etc.

To bring them back to their Gemini heart center, ask them, "What have you heard about (something topical)?" "Read anything interesting lately?" Or, "What's the problem?"

Cancer, when feeling unloved, or heavily responsible for their loved ones, can become negative Capricorn -- getting on with their work huffily, "I've got all this work to do," or "The world's going downhill."

To bring them back to their Cancer heart center, put your arm around their shoulder, ask what has upset them, listen, and don't try to make things right.

Leo, when feeling a lack of energy, or when rebuffed or hurt, can become negative Aquarius -- keeping away from people, won't say how they feel, apathetic, etc.

To bring them back to their Leo heart center, tell them what you like about their warmth, verbally appreciate something about their appearance or their style, smile into their eyes, or help them laugh about something.

Virgo, when feeling unable to cope, or when their helpful intentions are misunderstood, can become negative Pisces -- emotional, unfocused, martyred, weepy, feeling useless, etc.

To bring them back to their Virgo heart center, ask them, "What would you advise me to do about (something they are good at)?" "How can I help you?" Or point out how truly helpful they are.

Libra, when feeling challenged or criticized, or feeling pressured to make a decision, can become negative Aries -- aggressive, argumentative, etc.

To bring them back to their Libra heart center, say to them, "Take your time," "What color would best describe how you feel?" "How can these two viewpoints be reconciled?" Or, play music they like.

Scorpio, when feeling exposed and vulnerable, or deeply hurt, can become negative Taurus -- stubbornly silent, obstructive, etc.

To bring them back to their Scorpio heart center, say to them, "It may be hard to put into words, but can you tell me how you are feeling?" Or, if you can accept it, let them express their anger, grief, or pain, or point out the funny side of the situation.

Sagittarius, when feeling trapped by responsibility or overburdened with commitments, can become negative Gemini -- flippant, superficial, talking without meaning, upset and not talking at all, etc.

To bring them back to their Sagittarius heart center, ask them which of their commitments has the highest priority, and then say, "Is there an adventure in disguise here?" Or suggest an outing or a party.

Capricorn, when feeling overburdened with responsibilities and unsupported, can become negative Cancer -- moody, possessive, emotional, etc.

To bring them back to their Capricorn heart center, say to them: "I really appreciate all the work you are doing," "It is wonderful how I can rely on you doing what you say you will do," "That was a great achievement (something they worked hard at)," or, "What are you upset about?"

Aquarius, when losing their detached point of view about something, can become negative Leo -- dogmatic, domineering, not listening, etc.

To bring them back to their Aquarian heart center, ask them: "Why do you think that happened?" "You sound a bit involved, could you say what it is that's getting to you?" Or, ask in a group, "What do you others think about that?"

Pisces, when feeling taken for granted or exhausted from caring for others, can become negative Virgo -- cold, critical, perfectionistic, etc.

To bring them back to their Pisces heart center, ask them, "Do you ever get the feeling that no one appreciates you?" "It must be really difficult sometimes being as sensitive as you are," or, "What's the worst of the situation?" Encourage them to have a good cry about it to let it out of their system, or ask what boundaries they feel they need.

Important Note
When any person (including yourself) is acting out the negative of their own Sun sign, there is no need to interfere. Most people feel better when others give them their undivided attention, and listen to them without interrupting or trying to solve their problems for them. They do not need help, just the opportunity to express themselves without being judged!

On the other hand, there are often times when people are expressing the positive behavior of the Zodiac sign opposite to their own. Opposite astrology signs, when positively expressed, are complementary to each other, and even need each other for balance within the Zodiac circle.

Aries needs some Libran diplomacy to get away with being themselves.

Taurus needs the Scorpio depth of feeling to be truly secure with people.

Gemini needs the Sagittarian broad focus to bring value into their communicating.

Cancer needs to take Capricorn responsibility for supplying the needs of their inner child.

Leo needs some Aquarian detachment, when faced with their audience, to maintain enough courage to be sincere.

Virgo needs to be in Pisces' selfless service to prevent their critical skills from becoming painful.

Libra needs to be centered in themselves, like Aries, to balance their world without unbalancing themselves.

Scorpio needs their feet on the Taurus bedrock to keep their head above emotional water.

Sagittarius needs to communicate with Gemini versatility to get their brilliant ideas across.

Capricorn needs to acknowledge their feelings, like Cancer, in order to stay connected to those they support.

Aquarius needs to come from the heart with Leo sincerity to have their unpossessive love appreciated and received.

Pisces needs the focus of Virgo to become self-aware in the midst of sensing everyone else.

Perhaps the most important point to make about the Astrology signs is that all people feel better about themselves when the gifts of their own Sun sign are appreciated by others. If we would appreciate children when they are expressing their Sun sign qualities, they would have a better sense of self-esteem, a better start in life.

EXERCISES

1. Think about times when you act out the negatives of your opposite sign. What would bring you back to your own Sun sign?

2. Notice a friend displaying negative behavior. Is it the negative of their own Sun sign, or of the opposite sign? If it is the opposite, how do you think they could be helped back to their own sign? Does it work? If not, why not? What does work?

When will you meet your soul mates? When will you marry?

No matter where you Venus is, what house your ruler is in; you can still discover much about your personal love karma by following some simple astrological rules. For instance; the more planets you have in the 7th house of marriage or 5th house of romance; the more opportunies you’ll have. If Venus is aspected by Mars; you’ll also find plenty of opportunities.

You have Love Karma if:

The ruler of your ascendant is in the house of romance or marriage; you’ll have major love karma in this life. The rulers of the 5th and 7th house are heavily aspected you will find plenty of opportunities to merge with another. Venus is heavily aspected by Mars is another indication. However if it’s by square or opposition; expect much friction and trouble.

Venus is well aspected by other planets; you can expect good love karma. Venus is sextile or trine Neptune; you may your soul mate in this life time. Yet if it’s afflicted, you may have a difficult time finding them. Otherwise, you may be duped and swindled in affairs of the heart. Simply because you are only able to see the good in others. It works best if you find a spiritual or artistic mate.

With a Venus and Saturn in good aspect, you can find a steady loyal mate. If Venus is in Hard aspect to Saturn; you may put up with another; instead of enjoying them out of a misdirected sense of loyalty.

Venus is sextile or trine to Pluto; you are destined to become passionate with someone; perhaps powerful? Yet if Venus is afflicted by Pluto you may become involved with someone already taken or married. Otherwise your partner may cheat on you and bring you much heartache. Venus is highly elevated in your 10th house, you may marry well.

Your Ascendant ruler is in the 8th house of joint finances and well aspected; you will benefit from your partner. However if the ruler of that house or planets in it are afflicted, think twice before you commit yourself; you will lose instead of gain from another!

You have a Sun/ Moon square in your natal chart you will find much strife in your relationships; for whenever your Sun connects to another, your Moon will be squaring it.

The most romantic times are when:

Transiting Venus conjuncts the Sun or Ascendant.
Transiting Venus or Jupiter is in your 5th or 7th houses.

When both transiting Venus and Mars are in your Sun sign; (which is a rare occurrence) but it does happen from time to time. Yet, if one Venus or Mar transit is favorable but another is not; you may meet someone whose Sun is incompatible to your own Sun sign.

The Vertex:

The vertex is not a planet, but a third angle in your chart, (the first 2 being the Asc and Mc). It is an angle of fate; otherwise know as the part of sacred relationships. Once you note the degree of your vertex you may discover important people in your life have their Sun, Moon, Venus or Ascendant conjunct yours.

You should honor these relationships as they have much to teach or share with you. You may experience a great gravity with them; especially if your vertex conjoins their south node or Ascendant. John Lennon and Yoko Ono had a double whammy Vertex/ Ascendant. Transits, progressions or solar Arc directions to your Vertex may also reveal the timing of when you’ll meet these special people.

Prenatal Eclipse:

Relationship Karma may be revealed by checking the eclipses that took place during the 9 months before you were born. Key people in your life may have their Sun, Moon, Asc/ IC or Saturn exactly on these points.

Marriage Indicators

* To time marriage and romance; use both forward and conversemovements of solar arc directions, secondary and tertiaryprogressions. I personally feel that solar arc directions are morepowerful. Converse solar arc directions are considered by many to be more fated in nature.

First find the ruler of your 7th house; also the ruler of your 5th house of romance. Once you find the rulers of these houses, you will find opportunities come your way when they send or receive solar arc directions.

The most common solar arc progressions for marriage are; Venus well aspected to the ascendant or midheaven. Transits, progressions and solar arc directions will be active the year you marry. Both transits and progressed or solar arc Lunar positions will be active in the year you marry. However the converse progressed or solar arc Moon is more frequently shown. Lunar eclipses may help to time the month of marriage; especially if they fall into your seventh house of partners.

Synastry Timers:

You may find that your progressed or solar arc Moon is in aspect to another’s natal chart position.

Or when your progressed or solar arc directed Moon conjuncts your partner’s Sun, Moon, Venus, Ascendant or Descendant; also by converse movement.

Sometimes the progressed or solar arc moon (forward and reversed) will meet your partner’s progressed or directed moon.

Marriage may be indicated if your Moon and another’s; are opposite by converse direction.

Midpoint Considerations:

Transits made to your Sun/Moon midpoint; or to your partners. Transits to your composite Sun/Moon midpoint will also determine when you will marry. The composite Sun/Moon midpoint will be active; especially if another’s Sun/Moon midpoint conjuncts yours. Check the progressed or solar arc directed Suns to see if they fall on the composite Sun/Moon midpoint.

Timing is everything. Astrology holds the key to timing.

Love and astrology has it's own special timing, and there are indications within your progressed chart that will help you hone into those special years when someone new will be coming into your life or it's an indication of a marriage year.

First you have to have your natal chart in order to compare your progressed chart to it. There are three progressed charts to work with. There's your forwarded directed chart, converse directed chart, and your solar arc progressed chart.

When you get your progressed charts, you can begin to compare them to your natal chart (a three wheel chart is recommended). Each planet progresses at a different rate, and when one of your love planets progresses to make an aspect to one of your natal - or another progressed - love planet you have a love year, bringing you either a new love relationship or possibly a marriage year !

Aspects that are formed by the progressed planet to the natal planet are the strongest, but you will also see them making aspects to the other progressed planets. I've seen love connections when converse to converse were seen, and progressed to converse, but most importantly progressed to natal. In many cases you'll find up to 3 of these indicators from all or any of these combinations.

Here's a list of what to look for, the planet in bold is the progressed planet, the other planets can be natal or progressed. And numero uno love planet is Venus of course!

* Venus - Sun, Moon, Mars, Ascendant, Descendant, MC, IC, Chiron, Jupiter, and any planet in your 7th house or your 7th house ruler.
* Mars - Sun, Venus, Angles, 7th house planets and rulers.
* Sun - Venus, Moon, Mars, Angles (especially the Descendant) and Chiron.
* Moon - Venus, Sun, Mars, 7th house planet or ruler.
* Progressed Ascendant/Descendant - Venus, Moon, Sun, Jupiter, 7th house planets and rulers.
* Progressed MC/IC Angle - Venus, Moon, Mars, 7th house planet Or 7th house ruler.

The aspects seen most frequently are conjunction, trine, and the sextile. However, squares and oppositions are noted as well.

The most frequently seen aspects for love in astrology are between these planets in order:

* Venus/Mars
* Sun/Venus
* Sun/Mars
* Sun/Moon
* Moon/Venus and Moon/Mars
* Any of the love planets to the Angles and 7th house ruler

And one more to look at is your Arabic Part of Marriage and love planets making an aspect to this point.

When you are comparing your progressed love planets to natal/ progressed planets, look for an orb within 1 degree.

Look for Venus to work her magic from the time the aspect is exact to 1 degree after. Mars works a bit faster, look for an orb 1 degree before to exact. All the others are in the works anytime the orb is within one degree - before or after.

To fine tune the timing of when a new love or a marriage will take place look to the transits that set off the progressions.

If you are already in a love relationship and you are looking for a marriage year this works too!

That gives you an overview of love - astrology style.

Circumstance of love

We all know that Venus is the planet of "love" (actually, it's rather the planet of relating) but what about the sign of love? Love that is playful, yet comes straight from the heart.

The sign of love is Leo, this fixed fire sign, symbolizing burning charcoal that never extinguishes... Leo symbolizes the internal life force, the heart and creative self-expression.

Love IS creative self-expression!

So, the sign of love definitely is Leo.

That's why the house cusp Leo is on will point to the circumstances that lead to love and romance!

If Leo is on your 3rd house cusp, love is seldom far away from your place of residence. It may be in your neighbourhood, in the same street or not far off. You may fall in love with younger people or students as well.

If Leo is on your 6th house cusp of working environment and co-workers, you'll find love in your working environment (almost always a co-worker is involved).

Also, Leo on the 12th house cusp brings love and work together, but this time in quite another way. Don't forget to use the derivative house meanings here.

The 12th house is the 6th house (of working environment) of the 7th house (the others, the people you encounter and meet). Also, it's the 7th of the 6th house.

Put in other words, your 12th house points to clients and customers! So, no doubt that Leo on the 12th house brings love and romance with a client or customer.

That's why Leo on the 1st house often brings romance with a brother or sister of a friend of yours. The first is the 3rd house (sibling) of the 11th house (of friends). Also, it's the 11th (friends) of the 3rd (your siblings), connecting love with the friend of a sibling.

Leo on the 7th house connects romance and love with social gatherings and meetings. Also, public places where people gather, where there is "an audience" (the movies, the theatre, manifestations, concerts,...).

Leo on the 8th house cusp connects love and romance with a sibling (3rd house) of a co-worker or employee (6th house).

Leo on the 9th house often denotes romantic affairs with a member of your family-in-law. Also, people living away from your place of residence (be it in another town, state, county or country) bring romance into your life.

Leo on the 10th house brings love and romance with your employer or boss. Also, you may find love with older people, especially if you are a woman.

Leo on the 11th house relates love and romance to the organisations and groupings you're a member of. friends may become lovers. As the 11th house also is the 3rd house of the 9th house, pay attention not to fall in love with your brother- or sister-in-law.

Just be a little creative to find the true meaning of Leo on the different house positions.

And, you may ask, what if Leo is intercepted in a house?

This is a very important indication.

Interceptions almost always denote something secret or hidden or something that is not disclosed or that is unvisible. Also, interceptions point to things that are fenced in, that are in-between something.

If Leo is intercepted, your love life will unfold in a secret or a hidden way. Also, there may be a love triangle (you are fenced in or in-between someone else).

You'll be astonished to see how valuable these delineations are and how much more insight you will gain.

When to find love - Simple methods

Check the transiting Venus and Mars positions (I)

Whenever the planet of love (Venus) and the planet of instinctive drives and desires (Mars) transit your Sun sign, romance can be in the air. These are periods in which attraction rules and when you can increase the odds of finding love.
Also, when both transiting planets are in a sign that trines your Sun sign (i.e transiting Venus and Mars are in a sign of the same element as your Sun sign), it's a good time to find love.
The trine is a "no friction" aspect and love may enter your life "as unexpectedly as a thief in the night."
For your convenience we have calculated the dates when both transiting Venus and transiting Mars are in the same sign from 2006 till 2015, so that you can easily look up the dates when to find love!
  • October 1 - October 23, 2006: both planets are in the air sign Libra (favorable to Gemini, Libra or Aquarius)
  • October 25 - November 17, 2006: both planets are in the water sign Scorpio (favorable to Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces)
  • December 7 - December 11, 2006: both planets are in the fire sign Sagittarius (favorable to Aries, Leo or Sagittarius)

Check the transiting Venus and Mars positions (II)

From empirical research, we noticed that whenever the planet of love (Venus) and the planet of instinctive drives and desires (Mars) transit the zodiac sign that is opposite your Sun sign, romance can be in the air.

In many instances, we found that this period marks a time of (sexual) encounters and love. These are periods in which attraction rules and when you can increase the odds of finding love.
When both planets are in the zodiac sign opposite your own Sun sign, they are in your 7th solar house (the 7th house counting from your Sun sign) of encounters, the (significant) "other", meetings and relationships. That's why they may bring attraction and love.

For your convenience we have calculated the dates when both transiting Venus and transiting Mars are in the sign opposite the Sun sign from 2009 till 2020 so that you can easily look up when to find love!

Check the progressed Moon-Venus aspects

Another very simple way to answer the question when to find love is by taking a look at your (secondary) progressed horoscope (1 day for a year).

If you don't have any astrology software to calculate your progressed charts, just visit Astrodienst's Web Site to get your free progressed charts, and so much more.

When to find love is easy because any time the progressed Moon aspects Venus with an orb of 1° love and romance may be in the air. Use all the aspects that are a multiple of 30, starting with 0° (the conjunction) and disregard the square (aspect of 90°).

Also, do not underestimate the converse progressions, they are as valuable as the direct progressions -- if not more!

Whenever transiting Jupiter and Saturn both make a major harmonious aspect (conjunction, sextile or trine) to the ruler (or co-ruler) of your 5th house of love, be prepared for an important and radical change in your love life. Use an orb of 3° and list the periods when both planets build such a soft aspect to know when to find love.
Note that we use the Topocentric house system because this system has giiven us the best results. Also try out the equal houses as they are most valuable too and give some additional information.
Also note that Aquarius, Scorpio and Pisces have two rulers:
  • Saturn and Uranus rule Aquarius
  • Mars and Scorpio rule Scorpio
  • Jupiter and Neptune rule Pisces
Often, the outer planets, Pluto, Neptune and even Uranus conjunct, sextile or trine the ruler of the 5th house may bring a profound change too. Uranus is often more short-lived though.

This rule is quite simple too if you want to know when to find love.
If you're a woman, check if the progressed Sun conjuncts your natal MC. Don't forget to take a look at the converse progressions too!
If you're a man, check if the progressed Moon conjuncts your natal MC. Don't forget to take a look at the converse progressions too!
Often, this way the Lights indicate when to find love when they culminate by bringing the archetypal male or female principle in the spotlight.

In our March 2005, Issue #4 of our Love Letter we discussed the 8-year cycle of Venus, planet of love.
Indeed the ages of 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48 ... (and all multiples of 8) are ages ruled by Venus, planet of love, relationships and encounters. In these ages (new) friendships and, eventually, love almost always will come your way...

This is the more so if you are born under the zodiac signs of Taurus or Libra -- which are both ruled by Venus. This may also apply if Venus culminates in your natal chart (which denotes that Venus is the highest planet or in other words, the planet that is closest to the MC and stands above all other planets and bodies).
  • If your solar return for one of these ages shows favorable aspects to Venus, your love life may prosper for the coming (eight) years.
  • If your solar return for one of these ages shows unfavorable aspects to Venus, your relationships may bring sorrow and/or endings in the coming (eight) years.
There is something else too about the Sun-Venus Synodic Cycle.

If the transiting Sun-Venus conjunction is exactly conjunct one of your personal planets or points (Sun, Moon, Ascendant, MC, Pars Fortuna, Mercury, Venus or Mars) expect a profound change and transformation in your (love) life, the more far-reaching when Venus is retrograde!

Below you can find the transiting Sun-Venus conjunctions for the next couple of years so you can check whether or not this duo conjuncts any of your personal points:
  • March 30, 2005 at 10° Aries (Venus direct)
  • January 13, 2006 at 23° Capricaorn (Venus retrograde)
  • October 27, 2006 at 4° Scorpio (Venus direct)
  • August 17, 2007 at 24° Leo (Venus retrograde)

So, check your natal charts and see if in the future one of these conjunctions joins one of your natal personal points and if so, be in for a most important transformation in your (love) life.

Check if, and when, the progressed Moon is EXACTLY (in the same numerical degree) conjunct your (natal or progressed) Vertex. This configuration also tells you when to find love!

The Vertex is said to bring "fated encounters", which we have found to be almost always true, one way or the other.

Also, don't underestimate the influence and importance of Venus or the ruler of your 5th house of love conjoining the Vertex regarding your love life.

Overlaying the birth planets onto a map of the world and look at those areas where your planetary energies are strong. For instance, if you wanted to travel the world and broaden your spiritual or intellectual horizons it is good to get on a lucky Jupiter line, or, if you wanted to find romance you could follow Venus (if you were a man from Mars) or Mars (if you are a lady from Venus). Increased personal success, a Sun line; discover true roots on a Moon line, or find your spiritual home with Neptune. Saturn; firmer structure, challenge and perhaps a deep sense of ancient belonging, and a Moon Node line, a great destiny point which transforms your life.

How To Find Out When Love Is In The Air... -
By Analyzing the Position of Progressed Venus

Our romance horoscopes will tell you when love is in the air.

How exactly?

Actually, we will assess the secondary progressions (1° for a year rate) and look at the position of progressed Venus through the degrees of the zodiac.

There are 360 degrees in the zodiac but some degrees are more important than others.

In our romance horoscopes, we will only delineate the position of progressed Venus at the so-called "critical degrees": 29° - 0° and 15° in a sign.

Everytime (secondary progressed 1° = 1 year rate) Venus is at a critical degree your love life may get in the spotlight - for good or for bad.

By analyzing the position of (direct or converse) progressed Venus in the romance horoscopes you will know when love is in the air.

Don't forget to cast your converse progressions as well as our romance horoscopes are valid for direct and converse progressions.

Moreover, we have found that the converse secondary progressions give far better results!
