Part of Fortune

In astrology, the Part of Fortune, sometimes called Fortuna, is the most popular Arabic Part. Arabic Parts are sensitive points in a chart, and are calculated using specific formulas whereby two planets or points are added together, and a third planet or point is subtracted from that result.

The Part of Fortune is calculated as follows:

For day charts, Ascendant + Moon - Sun
For night charts, Ascendant + Sun - Moon

Note that a chart is considered a day chart when the Sun is above the horizon (occupying any house from house 7 to 12), and a night chart when the Sun isbelow the horizon (occupying any of the first six houses).

The Part of Fortune represents worldly success, and is associated with the physical body and health as well. It can be indicative of the career or vocation. The condition and placement of the ruling planet of the Part of Fortune (that is, the natural ruler of the sign in which the Part of Fortune is placed) is important to factor into the interpretation of this Arabic part. Worldly success and prosperity are associated with the Part of Fortune, and both its sign and house placement suggests innate abilities and talents--areas of life and qualities that are expressed naturally.
The Part of Fortune lies the same distance in longitude from the Ascendant as the Moon lies from the Sun. Therefore, if for example the Sun is conjunct the Moon in the natal chart, the Part of Fortune will lie close to the Ascendant; and if the Sun and Moon are in opposition in the natal chart, the Part of Fortune will lie close to the Descendant.
It is interesting to note that the Arabic part, the Part of Spirit, is calculated in an opposite manner, and also symbolizes the reverse or opposite theme of spiritual well-being.
If the Part of Fortune is not listed or included in your natal chart wheel, you cancalculate the Part of Fortune (and other Arabic Parts) with this online Arabic Part Calculator. It's easy and accurate.

Keys to the Interpretation of the Part of Fortune:

As noted above, the Part of Fortune points to innate talents that set us on a path to worldly success.
  • First look to any planets or points that are tightly conjunct or opposite the Part of Fortune as significators of vocation, career, and natural talents--keys to success.
  • Second, determine the ruling planet of the sign of the Part of Fortune, and consider that planet as another significator.
  • Consider the sign and house placement of the Part of Fortune as qualities and areas of life where we possess natural and innate talents or abilities, and that can be considered keys to worldly success and prosperity.
  • Look to any planets or points posited in the same sign as the Part of Fortune, whether or not they are conjunct the point. These will also play a role in our profession.

Part of fortune
What is the Part of Fortune?
It certainly has an intriguing name.  Most of us have our dreams; that pot-of-gold  that we seek. And to the astrological community, that is exactly what the Part of Fortune indicates: the 'pot-of-gold' that is waiting at the end of our own personal rainbows. The key is to understand that the pot-of-gold referred to here manifests as what best serves the purpose and evolution of our soul, not our ego.

The Part of Fortune is a sensitive point in the chart derived from the positions of the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant. The Part of Fortune is one of many such 'parts' or points but the most widely used of the group.  Astrologers refer to such 'parts' as Arabic Parts.  These parts were developed during the Middle Ages in Arabia.  All of the Arabic Parts express the relationships of both distance and direction between other sensitive points in the chart and each is derived from three points in a horoscope.

The Part of Fortune is considered to be a most beneficial point in the chart.  If you have a copy of your natal chart, the Part of Fortune looks like a circle with an "x" in it. The house in which it is positioned in the horoscope is said to represent the area in which our endeavors are most likely to be auspicious.  These are usually endeavors that we are naturally drawn to without really understanding why. The sign that the Part of Fortune is in indicates the best approach to those endeavors as indicated by the house location. The sign where our natal Part of Fortune is placed represents traits that, if developed, bring us benefits and/or happiness.  The key to accessing the Part of Fortune, is best said in one word: cultivation.  We must cultivate the traits and learn about the affairs of the house that the Part of Fortune falls in to access its benefits.

The fortune indicated by this part is not necessarily materialistic or even tangible, though it can be.  It  depends on the sign and house location of the Part of Fortune.  The benefit can be on the physical, intellectual, emotional, and/or spiritual plane of experience.  In all cases it is through the cultivation and expression of this point that one will experience harmony and a sense of well-being.

As I mentioned above, all of the Arabic parts are derived from three other sensitive points in the horoscope.  In the case of the Part of Fortune, these three points are the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant.  The Sun, Moon, and Ascendant are the foundation of the human personality.  The sign rising at our birth, (the sign on our Ascendant), describes both our physiology and personality.  The Ascendant is the self as it is expressed to the outer world.  The sign that our natal Sun is in at the moment of our birth describes our core self.  Just as the Sun is in the center of the solar system, so does our Sun sign describe the center of the human personality and our vital life force.  Our Sun sign represents our personal sense of a unique self with a distinct identity. The sign that the Moon is in at our birth describes our emotional nature.  In addition, the moon represents our habitual response patterns and conditioned or instinctual reactions to the circumstances of our lives. It is because the Part of Fortune is derived from these three very significant points that it represents that place in the horoscope where one's fortune will be realized if we cultivate its gifts and refuse to compromise our authentic self. Ultimately, the Part of Fortune represents our inner sense of abundance because it encompasses the major triad that represents the self (the Sun, Moon and Ascendant).  Because the Part of Fortune is dependent upon how an individual integrates and uses the Sun, Moon and Ascendant, the fortune received will depend upon how well we balance the personal expression of these three factors.

The Part of Fortune is not only in a particular sign and house in the horoscope, it can also form angular relationships with (or aspect) other planets and points in the chart.  These linkages provide information about how to cultivate the Part of Fortune.  In addition, you are likely to have a strong reaction to someone who's own natal planets make contact with the Part of Fortune in your chart.  Additionally, the Part of Fortune is sensitive to transits and progressions.  However, I'll save these discussions for another time.  For now, let's just take a look at what the Part of Fortune in particular signs and houses indicates.

IMPORTANT:  Please keep in mind that the Part of Fortune is just one factor comprising the whole of any birth chart.  While the descriptions given below are insightful, to achieve a full understanding of the Part of Fortune dynamics (or any other factor of the chart) its symbolism must be combined with all of the other factors in the birth chart.

Three Eclipses! Where in your life are you being Eclipsed?

The first eclipse is a partial solar eclipse on June 1st at 11 degrees of Gemini. This eclipse will greatly affect Gemini and Sagittarius, but it will also impact all the air signs, Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. That's because this eclipse is at a trine aspect to Saturn in Libra which is an air sign. If you've been working very assiduously towards your goals, you may find that you receive long overdue rewards for your efforts. Wherever this falls in your chart will indicate where you may receive acknowledgement for your hard work. If you haven't been focused enough, then you will have an opportunity to create a new structure in order to move forward in that life area more effectively.

The next eclipse is a total lunar eclipse on June 15th at 24 degrees Sagittarius. As this is a total eclipse rather than a partial one, this has even more power than the previous one in Gemini. There will be considerable changes in your life and you may be expected to learn something new, maybe learn some new skills, possibly move to a new area or even a different country. Try not to resist the changes and this eclipse will not disrupt your life too severely. On a global level, there could be issues with travel, technology, computers, cars, planes, trains, roads and general communications. Try to maintain an open and flexible attitude.

The last eclipse is a partial solar eclipse on July 1st at 9 degrees Cancer. This is potentially the most challenging of all three as it makes some difficult aspects with the other planets. It will greatly affect the cardinal signs: Cancer, Capricorn, Aries and Libra. Depending on where it falls in your chart it could mean relationship problems, changes in your relationships especially with your family. It could mean a move and financial challenges, even your health may be affected. There is also the potential for huge profits from a business and also to meet your soul mate. These energies are very powerful and have an affect for at least six months or longer.

Eclipses and What They Mean in Your Life:

Look at your chart and see where the eclipse falls and you will have a period of about a year in which this life area will be stimulated. You will feel as though you don't have much choice, but you have to deal with issues facing you now and you cannot procrastinate any longer. There's usually a build up period of six months before the actual eclipse and consequences that need to be dealt with in the six months following the eclipse.

1st-7th house axis

You need to find balance between your relationships and yourself. You will be facing issues around courage, confidence, and independence. Here are some possible outcomes:

- An increased drive to take charge of your life.

- A complete change of your personal appearance, your body, and your self image

- You learn how to stand on your own two feet

- You may marry or have a separation

- A push to stronger identity and greater autonomy

2nd-8th house axis

You'll want to find a balance between your own security needs and comfort with the needs of other people. Your finances come into sharp focus:

- How well have you taken care of your finances?

- Do you need to make some changes?

- Are you spending more than you earn?

- Are you relying on someone else for your security?

- Prioritise your values and make sure you live in accordance with them

- Take actions so that you can feel safer and more secure. You may learn that it's not necessarily material things that make you feel secure.

3rd-9th house axis

Issues surrounding learning and sharing knowledge will come into focus. You may need to pay more attention to your immediate environment. Things you may face:

- A need to become more active and involved in your immediate environment

- Learn how to expand your horizons and look beyond your own world

- Force yourself out of a rut and stale habit patterns

- Start to communicate more effectively

- Learn something new

- Teach something new

- Prioritize your values and ensure you are living according to those values

- Make connections with people from an entirely different background than yours – either personal or business.

4th-10th house axis

This involves issues about your public and your private life, as well as paying attention to your career and your family. You'll need to find ways to:

- Strike a balance between home, security and family with the needs of your career, reputation and drive for success.

- Take charge of your private life

- Take charge of your career

- Start a new career path

- Balance the needs of home with work

- You have to move state or country for your work

- You may move home

5th-11th house axis

This is about finding out what gives you pleasure and maybe turning a hobby into a business. You'll be reevaluating your friendships and the groups to which you belong.

- A love affair may begin or end under this influence.

- New contacts with others are likely

- Try to take some risks especially with your creativity

- Develop your self confidence – maybe take up acting or public speaking

- Learn about working with others and being a team player

- Consider contributing to your community – maybe volunteering

6th-12th house axis

This is all about work, service and health - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. It's a good time to:

- Get more organised

- Adapt your routines

- Develop healthy habits and put some new structures into your life

- Let go of your fears and old destructive habit patterns

- Develop more compassion and understanding of others

- Let go of your obsessions and your worries

- Focus on the spiritual side of your life and go within for answers
